Nelson Designs: A Noble Heritage.

I know, I love it to.

Just another 100hp would be nice sometimes, the hull is so capable.

I wondered if you might say that. The M225ti is of course 204hp, the M300ti i think is 285hp, but its a tricky upgrade, you have to switch to the big inline pump and the cast ali case that the pump mounts to is different. Plus, there is 2 pumps, the excellent Bosch, or the rubbish Motorpal. I understand cooling to be marginal on the M300ti.

The M265's I put in Playtime we're fabulous. At 30 knots she was galloping along, then hammer down and she roared off!

If Latestarter was still posting, he'd tell you the answer is the Cummins B series, lots of things make that a very simple re-power, but.....the Cummins is mechanically noticeably more noisy and the marine specific Cummins parts are comedy bad pricing.

Here's a doer-upper with the M300 engines.

I didn't realise the cabins and wheelhouse was so narrow on the 40' hull.

....and the Aquastar moulded in 'trim tabs' on their widened 12'9" beam hull which has been shortened to 38'

Looking at an old magazine article in MBY May 2013 on the Aquastar 38' hull:

'Flat out this hull will reach 26 knots though he rarely takes it above 22knots. Any faster and the boat starts to plane on one side of the keel producing an unsettled rude. As a result Andrew sticks to 22 knots for fast cruising in most sea states and knocks it back to 18 knots when cruising with economy in mind.'

So it appears that their modified hull has altered the high speed stability.

Hotaria currently ashore on Hayling Island, John (owner) has engines out and hull is having the hull epoxied and painted, plus some other stuff.

The engines are the original v8 cats, 400hp, 48 valve I think, cranks are a 3 man lift, they are massive.

Expected back in commission next year.

Just wondering if you happen to come into contact with John could you please ask if he could give us some of his insights into the Nelson 40'; perhaps he has some photos of the rebuild etc :)

Just to clarify the connection between Halmatic Weymouth and Nelson:

Halmatic eventually bought James and Caddy and used the Weymouth name to market a complete range of semi displacement vessels, which they supplied fully or partially fitted, as well as just hulls/superstructures. They also continued to sell Nelson badged boats.
This new Halmatic / Weymouth range included the Weymouth 34, which was a redevelopment of the Weymouth 32, with a completely new GRP superstructure again from the board of John Askham.

Remember also at this time, Tylers had the mould tools for the Nelson 34, so Halmatic needed a successful 34 foot semi displacement boat in their Weymouth range to compete. Later they produced the Nelson 35 (designed by Arthur Mursell), but it was never marketed as a Weymouth.Other boats in the Halmatic Weymouth range included the Weymouth 42, which used a standard Nelson 40 hull plus a bathing platform and a super new GRP superstructure with inclusive aft cabin. This classic Nelson design has often been referred to as the 'Gentleman’s Motor Yacht'.
