I'm looking for an alternative to a Nelson 34...

Willing to consider anything in the 22-35' size range so long as it's a good seaboat with some character.

Any suggestions appreciated.

PS I read an old article somewhere a few years ago which detailed a semi displacement boat that looked an awful lot like a Nelson 34 but can't remember for the life of me what it was. It wasn't a Seaward or a Weymouth/Humber but was something a little rarer if anybody can help?

To start the list, I have:

Seaward
Weymouth/Humber 32/34
Aquastar
Landguard Nelson
Hardy
Channel Islands 32
Duver Nelson 23/25

No idea why this got ignored. For Hardy's the sweet spot boat in your range is the 32.It's got a planing profile with chines but is pretty heavy. strongseaboat, good for a couple.The36 has no chines and is better at around10 knots. I have the 25 which is very nippy and a good boat but a bit small against your spec. take a look at the Hardy web site for their brokerage list

Mitchell 31, as far as I know you can still buy a new one, or just buy hull moulding and fit out yourself.
 
Weymouth/Humber 34 I had one for 8 Years Excellent boat originally 180 hp re powered with 2x 265.

Prior to that two mitchells good boats but not the sea boat a Weymouth/Humber 34 is.

I currently have an Aquastar 48 sd.

You should also consider an Aquastar 38 much more accommodation for the size.

I would be happy to discuss the above.
 
those sorts of boats right up my street. does depend if you want and aft cockpit or more accommodation and an aft cabin, but you have listed out some nice tough boats.... but does depend quite a bit on budget...

Like Stuart, I too have a Hardy Mariner 26, you state you are looking for anything between 22 and 35.. so what we have is in your scope I would have thought.. Also as Stuart says Hardy make a very nice 32 which if budget allows would be the one to consider.

Does depend if you want to go for a more commercial rugged boat, or one fitted out that SWMBO might like! Also with these types of semi displacement boats built like brick outhouses fuel consumption can be a real PITA...buy something with a couple of older lumps installed and a 8-10 tonne weight & expect sub 1mpg for a lot of these types of boat.... makes cruising an expensive hobby. Buy newer and that aspect will improve.

Buy an Hardy Mariner and enjoy 2.8mpg (10LPH) economy.

I do like the Humber 35, one for sale at James Dickens marine, they also have a listing for a very cheap aquastar 118

I was told that the seller of that Aquastar 118 was keen to shift it pdq owing to divorce.

Another marque in the size range with tons of character would be Bertram. Saw a lovely 8-9m model for sale in St Trop a while back. Sadly, with a St Trop price tag!
 
I moved from sail to power two years ago and started looking at Nelsons because I had been involved in building several 42 and 44s. Not wanting a boat that big I looked at smaller ones but they were far too narrow beamed. Having researched the market I finally settled on an Aquastar 33 Oceanranger. Has very similar seakeeping qualities but is 11ft beam rather than 9point something. I am VERY happy with it
 
There's a couple of Aquastar 33's for sale in Jersey and another soon to be possibly. Ranging from £90k down to possibly 35-40.

With many people giving up due to fuel/running costs it truly is a buyers market at the mo, particularly for this type of vessel.

That's very true! Mine was advertised originally at £65K and after over 12 months unsold I bought her for £20K less than that. Basically she was in very good nick but needed tidying. As I enjoy working on boats, I never mind a project and think if you see one not presented very well but basically all there all but for a bit of work you can find real bargains about for the reasons you state...

The OP asked for Nelson alternatives; how about a workboat Cat like the cheetah range: half the fuel consumption for the same level of sea keeping as a S/D hull, easy to maintain outboards that tilt up out of the water, light weight......available with long wheelhouse.
