Hi all,

I am new to motorboats and this forum. I am looking to buy a Nelson 34 with budget of £25K (recommended by a friend). Does anyone know about Nelson 34 (or equivalent) i.e. pros/cons, things to look for and problems etc.

P.S. I also posted the same topic on another ybw forum and was told that I need to pay much more. Can someone give me an idea what is the realistic price e.g £40k? £50K £60k?

Regards
Charles

I think i replied to the same question recently.

I had a Halmatic 34 often mistakenly called a nelson.

This boat was designed for Halmatic by John Askam and Halmatic either fitted the boat out themselves and called it a Weymouth 34 it was also fitted out I blieve by Humber and called surprisinly a Humber 34. Mine was a 1985 and was the only one fitted out by Seaward Marine and called wait for it a Seaward 34.

The boats were used as motor yachts and work boats the hull was also used as a pilot boat . Produced from about 1978 to late 1980s to order. engines generaly 2 of sabre 130 or 180 hp diesel.

Mine originalyhad a pair of VP 150 hp diesel and then was fitted with a pait of BMW/Mercruiser 180hp diesels which were dogs. I repowered the boat with 2x Sabre/perkins 265 which was over the top but fast. Cruising speed 22.5knots 26 flat out.

A very good boat , good seakeeping , strong but my family outgrew the accomodation. I had it for 9 years.

Some of the true nelsons are very narrow, avoid the wooden hulls and wooden superstructure.

Halmatic 34 sell for between 45 and 100K depending on condition age and machinery.

Give me a call.

Having spent a lot of time dreaming of owning a Nelson I've searched most of the sites...for 25k you'll only get either an old twin screw one (maybe ex mod) or maybe a slightly later single. Check out the Nelson yacht Brokerage, you'll find them on line (http://www.nelsonyachts.co.uk/). I also looked at a Weymouth 32 for about 35k. She was fairly old, about 1975, but up together. For 25K I don't think you'll be looking any newer than late 70's. I'm looking now ready for my retirement in 20 years time!! good luck with your search you can't beat a Nelson for Sea keeping...
Cheers Iain

There's a nice one on page 140 of Septembers boats and yachting, worth looking at their web site boats-for-sale.com.

I have an ex-MOD Nelwson 34 - former Admiral's barge from the previous Ark Royal.

They do exist for the price you are quoting but that will literally be ex-MOD. Mine was refurbished to an extent but still not adapted for crusing and cost a bit more. I had mine surveyed and it passed with flying colours despite being 1969. The electrics were described as perfect if a bit dated and so I have only added inverters, distribution, shore power etc rather than replace.

They are narrow in the beam so can roll when stationery or in a beam sea but will plough on through most things without dropping speed. Mine has twin Perkins Turbo 6.354 and cruises at 12 to 14 knots but at 2250 revs will reach towards 20knots. The engines are mounted high so restricting space in the cockpit but would still recommend twin engined rather than the singles that can be found. The cabin space is good given the beam.

There are one or two heavily done up one's about at the moment.

Do PM if you want more info.
