Needles to Alderney

I went through the race from Cherbourg last month. I found the strongest tide was 1M north of C de la H. You really don't want to find that taking you the wrong way.

Re Alderney, it's amazing the things you forget

God can it roll in there! (obviously not if you have a cat), but even when there is no hint of an easterly in the breeze to can get a confused swell in the harbour and the closer to the breakwater you are, the more you can get rolled around...sometimes ;)
 
the moorings do seem a little close, but you're fine if you're under 40' .... it is quite rolly - but the closer you are to the wall the calmer it will be - well - that's what we found having come from there a few days ago ...
we would've anchored and kedged, but we don't have a kedge!

we'll probably be back there on Sunday/Monday ...

Oh - coming in from Yarmouth - no more tricky than from Poole .. ie - easy! Just watch them ships on the approaches to the TSS ... we tracked 10 on radar & AIS at one point .... clearance? 0.3Nm from a couple ... but it was clear vis and flat calm .... so easy enough to miss each other.

Well being just 32ft, we've had another boat swinging around and hitting us (buoy 14 as mentioned above)

And we found the refraction off the wall was worse the closer the mooring was...this was after a F5-6 W-SW
 
I suppose it does help if you all swing the same way ... we missed everything with 37' - so perhaps you're just not long enough! :o
 
Bouy No 6 is new so seems the harbour Master is getting round to replacing some of them. It is also taller which helps SWMBO get the hook on it. Plenty of space yesterday afternoon unlike last year when the place was choka.
