Hi

I'm currently using my Birchwood 37 on the Thames but next season I hope to take it to the coast.

The Radio and Navigation I believe is the original fitment that was supplied 25 years ago, and includes the old Decca system so you can see what vintage I'm talking about.

My question is what do I replace it with ?

I don't want to go overboard money wise and would be quite happy to buy second hand units provided they are fairly modern and use the latest navigation facilities like GPS etc. Having a flybridge I would also like a navigation repeater on the flybrige together with an extension radio unit. As you can probably tell I'm fairly new to boating and intend going on various courses like VHF Radio etc. before hand. One of the other boaters in my marina suggested something like a slightly older generation (not the new touch screen) Raymarine E120 or C120 system.

Any advice appreciated

Glen

Very happy with my Standard Horizon VHF 2100x with AIS plugged into a Standard Horizon 180i plotter. Works a treat and didn't break the bank.

NASA repeater works well and a RAM mike should sort the fly ridge too.

Garmin GPSMAP 750 might still be available and will be sensible money now as the 751 is now the current model. Mine is linked to a Furuno RO4800 VHF / AIS set. Might get the pair for less than £800

Get an Ipad with Navionics instead of a plotter - much more use.

I agree - If you are going to link various NMEA components (Plotter, AIS, autohelm, blah) then you probably need to go down the expensive and complex route.

If you just want to know where you are and whats around you then tablet navigation is the way forward, IMO.

I'll second the Standard Horizon Matrix series. Had a GX2150 on the last boat. Even the girls liked it and looked at the AIS screen. Just bought a GX2000 for the new boat, as it had already an AIS transmitter installed.
Trainer at the LRC course agreed, that it has an easier user interface than Icoms.

Over the years, I've had good experience with both Garmin and Raymarine. A few years ago I upgraded the 10 year old Raymarine to Lowrence. I had 2 plotters, one at the helm, the other below and had pixel problems with both. My new boat has a vast array of Simrad and just about all of it has been replaced under warranty........and still doesn't work properly

Many thanks for all the information, its much appreciated.

Does anyone know if there is a plotter available that can be detached for use at another location, for example removing from the main cabin steering station to a flybridge position. It appears if you want a plotter at both location's you have to buy two plotters, as you can only steer from one or the other it would make sense to have a movable plotter.
