Because of all the snow and ice, the extra weight is causing the canopy and hoods to sag and stretch. Some of the boats I have seen, the hood has split or collapsed. As I work on boats in Port Solent and if you need yours checking this week, I will be around. (As a fellow boater no charge.) Hopefully when the sun comes out and things warm up the canvas should take up.

We had 2 inches of snow last week, I got down to the boat the following morning but it was too late, cover was ripped. Its not so bad, it needed replacing anyway, was hoping it would see out this year.

good point , my boat is trailered and on my drive ,that had 3 inchs of snow sat on it . i was hoping to get a nice winter day to take her out so she still had her toneau cover on .I cleared a load of snow off , climbed onto the bow , un- popped the studs and opened the bow windscreen door , the weight of the snow was pulling the two sides of the windscreen together !!! i got into the boat and then pushed on the cover to get rid of rest of snow , its bloody heavy ! good news is she was all nice and dry inside but as the post says check your cover .... i have also seen a boat on a mooring in the estuary with just the vhf aerial sticking out the water . not sure of the cause , maybe flat battery or faulty auto bilge or maybe the snow on the covers rolled her over or something ?

Just in Time

Managed to get to the boat a couple of days after last weeks dump. The top sides of the canopies were starting to sag, but after clearing off the snow (for the 2nd time in 10 days) and with a bit of sunshine, they seem to be none the worse.

I've left the snow on the coachroof though. I did actually clear it off after the first snowfall pre Christmas, but have decided there is more benefit to leaving it on (insulation against the low air temps?) than run the risk of damaging the gelcoat in the removal process. Anyone any theories or experiences of damage / benefit of snow build up on the boat, other than canopies?

Lesson Learned

And remember not pat the snow off from the inside. Started off ok, got to the clear panel and it just shattered. Doh. duck taped until the canvas repairers can get to it :-(

I was worried about that last week and emailed Shamrock Quay to check, the response I got was that most of the boats had no snow on the canvas. Mind you not sure about today.

I went down to the Hamble last thursday ..heavy snow the covers stiff as boards and had to defrost the door zip. Went down yesterday to more heavy snow which was melting but the screen cover was missing? How could this be as it too was stiff as a board last thurs. and there was no footprints anywhere. There has been no significant wind for the last few days and the boat a Sealine F33 is in a sheltered position. The covers were definitely there last thurs. as its dark inside with it fitted. Has anyone got an old one i can use as a template?
