I guess the downside being that unlike a Scuba Diver you would need to inflate it by yer own "puff".

I beleive these are pretty much "Old hat" technology wise for SCUBA Divers, (as far as an inflatable Sausage can be called Technology /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif).

The downside of needing to inflate it yourself (rather than using a quick blast from the SCUBA Tank air) may not always be practical of course - but may give yer something to do and fill the boredom when dying of Hypothermia /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif......... I may have a closer look at them if I am ever passing a watersports / Dive shop.........then order a hundred, triple the price and rename them "THE YACHT MASTER SURVIVAL SAUSAGE" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The problem is you need a full dive tank to charge the cylinder in the first place. This is called a delayed surface marker buoy (DSMB) and is designed to be deployed by a diver before he returns to the surface, usually so the close-by surface support can see them. They are quite buky, 200mm by 25mm dia, more for the self inflator. A wise diver also carries a collapsible flag when in the sea, it is more visible. Plastimo already market an inflatable personal danbuoy, costs abou 50 quid, self inflates and is more visible than the divers DSMB, that is less than the diving equivalent (with the cylinder)!

I came across a Visi-Flare like below that I would take diving with me. I then got one for my grab bag.

A number of suppliers can be found by google "Visi-Flare"
