NEED OPINION\'S PLEASE !!!

I NEED SOME HELP BEEN OUT OF BOATING FOR 3 YEARS AND WANT TO GET ANOTHER SO THE QUESTION IS . DO I BUY A BAYLINER 175 WITH WAKE TOWER 3L 165HP ENGINE OR BAYLINER 195 WITH 4.3L 220HP ENGINE , THE REASON I ASK IS THAT I HAD A FLETCHER MANY YEARS AGO WITH A 3.7L 165HP ENGINE IN IT, AND IT STRUGLES A BIT FOR WAKE BOARDING AND THE MONO SKI IT DID NOT ENTERTAIN. ONE CONCERN IS FUEL CONSUPTION ON THE 4.3L WILL IT BE MUCH WORSE THAN THE 3L BEING THAT THE 3L I THOUGHT MIGHT NEED TO DO MUCH MORE WORK! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hello and welcome. Just one matter of forum etiquette is that capitals is seen as shouting and rude. As for your question I would go for the bigger engine. Fuel consumption will be more but it's not as if you will be doing 1000's of miles crusing in that size boat is it. More of a 100m sprint than a marathon.

Sorry caps off . So you think bigger engine my thoughts on 3l would be it would strugle to pull a skier along with 3 people in a 17.5 ft boat what are your thoughts on that ? 4.3 l would manage fine but in a 19.5ft boat would it be doing just as much work as the 3l but burning way more fuel ? What speed would a 19.5 ft boat plane at below ski speed i hope !

Horses for courses. If you went for the smaller engine you could reduce the pitch of the prop to give you the bottom end you need. You'll have more pulling power but a lower top end.
I can't see that the 3ltr merc will struggle with a mono. My 145 vilevo pulls a mono and pushes a 21 foot boat onto the plane without too many probs.

The bigger engine will have more grunt anyway so there should be no probs there. It all depends on what useage the boat will have. For watersports do you want balls out speed? Probably not. It aleways worth having two props so maybe go for the smaller lump and invest in a lower pitch prop.

Hi
Personally I would go for the 195 reasons being.........
You will have more room for a start
Fuel consumption ski-ing may not be much worse for the bigger engine as its working no were near as hard as the 3L
Depends on size of ski'er but the 3L may well struggle to pull up a mono

Were are you ? could you get to one of Bayliners open days and have a go

Here is a link to Bayliner owners club forum. Ask the same question there and your bound to get a good responce

Good luck whichever you get

Re: NEED OPINION\'S PLEASE !!!

Hey,
I purchased a second boat a few years ago for the sole reason of wakeboarding. It's a Searay 180 bowrider with the 3.0l Merc. Think you may find this is 135hp rather than 165hp.
Anyway, fuel consumption between the 3.0l and 4.3l will not even be worth thinking about. With four people in the boat and one boarding it is just enough to get up and the weight in the stern causes a little more wake. Now added a wake tower and five blade stainless prop, fuel consumption has dropped a little but the boat feels more happy as now lifting people out the water rather than dragging.
Hope this helps

David
