As title says i want to and need to get new engine mounts. Unsure which ones to go for. Boat is a jeanneau sundream 28. the shaft coupling also has no dampening and is metal to metal, I think adding a dampener there would be good. is the whole task easy enough to do or would it be advised i get a marine engineer to do the job for me?

thanks

OEM are expensive and soft. Unless you have a sail drive, metal to metal couplings will lead to knackering your shaft bearings and possible induce whip in the prop shaft if it's long enough. The job is not beyond the capability of someone with a bit of Mechanical nous but if the engine compartment is tight it can be a Pfaff! I set mine up with feeler gauges side by side and top and bottom with the bolts in place but not tight. If that's all you need, have a go, you'll save yourself a few bob. If it all goes pear shaped, you can always call in an "Engineer". Bear in mind that the mountings are different specs for fore and aft.

ASAP supplies do an R&D direct replacement for the yanmar mounts, 75 for front and 100 for rear, we actually increased ours when change last year to 100 and 150 as stiffer, worked very well.

Also if your intersted I have the R&D flex coupling and half Shaft coupler for sale as I’ve just taken them off, 4” yanmar flange and 25mm Shaft

I have just replaced the very same engine mounts on Jeanneau Sunway 29, very similar yacht. Sea trial will be next week. I chose Yanmar parts for a several reasons; less phaff to get me to a resolution, does not create another uncertainty with vibration, less decisions for me, the yanmar dealer is based in the marina where the yacht is. I chose to ask an engineer to do it because: I reckoned they would do it quickly compared to me working it out, the actual hours labour was not a lot relative to the parts price and I have plenty of other stuff to do on the yacht which I do myself for example service the engine and all other annual yacht maintenance tasks. If I had plenty of time then it would be a job I could do myself.

Total hours to change mine including alignment just over 4 hours, very simple job. Measured each foot height first though and marked engine location, just wondered how that compared with yard doing it

with mine ( in the link ) the stud comes out of the base, so just take the engine weight, undo the top nut & remove, then undo the bottom nut right to the base, unscrew the stud & bottom nut. undo the foot fixings & slide the foot out. similar to your 4 hrs on my own on a 4 pot engine inc check alignment

I am interested, IF i can get the coupler in the position. It was the R&D coupler i was interested in getting anyway.

still unsure what brand to go for. i want as little fuss as possible, dont want to have to adjust a new set.

also someone on FB marine diesel page is adament that the left and right side is different, im sure hes wrong?-

Left and RIght are pairs the same, front to back different, detailed in the yanmar manual, can send you the page if your not sure

Front to back different due to gear box etc overhanging so weight distribution different

Best practice is any 2 of 3 between mounts shaft coupling and stern bearing can be flexible but one should be solid although the R&D shaft disc is acceptable as being solid in many cases
Best consult R&D for advise

any "new set" will need the mounts adjusting, to align the shaft. the old mounts will have sagged over the yrs

front & rear will differ due to different weight loadings, differing side to side in nonsense

thanks andyj30i, price is a lot cheaper than any other brand. seems too good to be true.

No worries. I had the same thought. Then again, 800 quid every 4yrs/1000hrs for the genuine set feels like daylight robbery. Hopefully someone with some experience of these might weigh in.
