I've got a 15 year old Mariner 2 hp and I run it on 50 to 1, which was specified in the owner's booklet and which seems to suit it well. Newer machines will specify a leaner mix but I'd stick with more oil for a machine of this vintage

Not for very long! The cooling system uses sea water. You'll see four (I think) inlet holes towards the bottom of the outboard leg, which draw in the water, and a "tell tale" just below the engine from which the cooling water exits. No water coming out of the tell tale = cooling system buggered, probably because it's got encrusted with salt. To run it at home, I stick the leg into our garden waterbutt, so that it's drawing up water (good idea anyway, to flush salt water out of the cooling system). Best not to use too much throttle or you will create an impromptu shower.............

thanks again for the help guys! this site is great. this boat has been run in fresh water only though, so no need to worry about the salt : )

I'd be very wary of running any outboard motor out of water, in case the water impeller is of the Jabsco rubber type. These break down very quickly if they are run without water lubricating and cooling the impeller.
