I am after a diagram or photos of how the morse engine control used on the Westerly Konsort goes together. I think its the original single lever with no button so engine forward or reverse engaged by initial lever movement and then operates the throttle. Just had engine refitted and it is not changing gear. I can't see how it can work looking at how it is currently set up so either fitted wrong or broken. Will get the engineer back but would love to know how it should look.

IF a Volvo engine find the exploded digram of the control in the parts list http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-schematics-MarineDieselEngines.aspx
It might help you.

But no button ?
How do you open the throttle without engaging gear if there is no button to press to prevent gear engagement ?

It's on a BUKH 20DV. It does not pull out. When it worked the gear select mechanism was sprung so there was resistance each way when in neutral and then the force you apply springs the gear and further movement does the throttle. It works very well but yes you can knock it into gear. At the moment the gear select does not seem to be connected to the rest of the mechanism but for the life of me I can't see how it is supposed to work.

Assuming you have the correct cables connected i.e. throttle to throttle and gear shift to gear shift it could be the "throw" of the gear cable is incorrect. This can be changed depending on which hole in the arm you attach the cable to. Question: when attempting to change gear does the gear shift cable move at all? IIRC there is a silver coloured "button" to the rear of the throttle lever that should be pushed fully in to allow the gear mechanism to operate. It is more a plunger rather than a little red button.

Yep, the cables are right. The throttle works. Definitely nothing other than the lever. I suspect that something is not connected that should be. I don't have a photo unfortunately as it would make things clear.
I repeat my question: when attempting to change gear does the gear shift cable move at all?

Here are diagrams and instructions for a TX morse control lever and box http://www.troppo.co.uk/odds/TX%20Controls%20B700SS.pdf

They may be similar enough to get an idea of how they work. As others have said there is almost certainly a button/lever/something that allows you to rev the engine without putting it in gear, you need to find that 'something' and ensure it is not stuck in/out.

You may be able to free it but don't bother taking it to bits as you won't get any new bits

There is a slot in a boss (which has the the gear selection lever) into which a pin in the centre shaft sits the button pushes the pin out of the slot to disengage the gear selector.
If the button is "nylon" and swells it jams and replace it
Further wear happens when the edge of the slot is worn in a chamfer or slope and is terminal and potentially boat damageing as the gear may not select especially when changing direction !

Thanks for the diagram that is the mechanism. Seems there is a button and it must have been stuck since I bought the boat. I will need to take it all apart as it looks like it was corroded and now something is not right.

When you take it apart you will find the button disengaged the gear lever so only the speed control cable moves. You may be able to unstuck it but you may find anew control head worth it.

If the button has a plastic cap on it removing the plastic may well prevent a recurrence of the problem. It solved a similar sticking problem on a W Berwick anyway. May have also just needed a very occasional spray with some WD40.

Thanks all, I will examine it when I am next at the boat. Sounds like I may need a new unit. There is no plastic button, just a bit of metal which I took to be the end of the shaft through the handle as pushing it did not have any effect. It was almost flush with the handle.

I'm fairly sure this problem came up recently. Someone mentioned drilling a small hole into the button and using a self tapper screwed in to be able to work the button back and forth while freeing it up with lots of WD40 or equivalent.

That is the button that moves the mechanism inside to disengage the lever that operates the gear cable. It is normally spring loaded so it pops out when you want to engage gear. It is seized in the disengaged position. Very common.
