Need Advice Tidal Thames

How far can I get on the Tidal Thames from Teddington Lock without needing a radio or having to contact anyone ?

Technicaly Blackwell point by the Dome, but its a good idea to carry one so you can shout for help. If you are over 20m (Narrow boat?) you have to carry a radio.

The reason I ask is I currently don't have a radio licence and intend doing a RYA course during the winter, Just wondering how far I can go legally.

Legally if under 20m you don't need one, but you are supposed to call London VTS to transit the barrier, I think you could do this by mobile phone if you really wanted to though.

20m rule dropped to 14m (45 ft ) in 2009 if I recall correctly.

An exemption to this is boats travelling between Tedders and Brentford.

Many thanks for the information.

So it seems apart from maintaining a listening watch for safety information, its only really necessary when transiting the Flood Barrier Control Zone.
