Firstly, thanks to all those of you that gave me advice on choosing my first sail boat, after much travelling, research and dedication I finally have the boat of my dreams. Now I need to 'park' it somewhere.

I am looking for a nice marina in and around Rhodes, Kos, Crete etc. Must be protected behind a breakwater so I can leave the boat unattended for a few weeks if necessary with water & power to berth. Also must have a travellift type crane so I can anti-foul in the Spring. Ideally needs to be within 20 mins drive of a small airstrip or airport. Any suggestions ?

Well it may be worth enquiring at Agios Nikolaos on Crete.
Well sheletered Marina on the North coast. Its in Kolpos Mirabelou which is just East of Hiraklion.
I sheltered there for a few days last august, prices are pretty good it would seem and the staff are helpful and friendly. The marina is in the town so most facilities are in easy walking distance. There was promise of a travel lift by now and they had done all the building for it.

Larnaca is overcrowded and not a place to really keep a boat unless you are desperate.

There is a 3-4 year waiting list for St Raphael, Limassol which is a nice marina (unless you want to find it at night!)

Latchi is only half a marina, its exposed, shallow, full of fishing boats, has no security whatsoever (drunk brit tourists freely wander around the boats) or no facilities. Not really what you would call a marina.

I agree with Hanabella about Agios Nikolaos on Crete - I've left my boat there several times and have friends who over wintered there. Remember though that Crete can be a very windy place and to get anywhere else you have to go against the prevailing northerlies.

Hello,
Not been there myself, but my friends Helga and Claus-liveaboards- checked KOS new marina and Turkey, and they are spending the winter in KOS. They told me they like the place and plenty of facilities too. If you want to contact them they have the web site www.bluewaterboats.net

Kos Marina

Kos marina has all that you want although it isn't totally complete yet.

Our boat was based there in 2001 for a few months and it did give us a good upwind "start".

Unless you get behind a very large hill, the Meltemi will always be a major influence in those islands.

Re: Kos Marina

Thanks George, I have e-mailed them, hopefully if its not too much of a liberty, they can offer some useful advise.

With regards to Paphos, it has been identified that Cyprus requires 1800 more berths. There have been plans to construct a new marina at Corel Bay and 3 or 4 other sites. That was about 10 years ago! Constructing decent marinas always falls foul of petty bureacracy and vested interests. So nobody here is holding their breath on half a dozen deperately needed new marinas! Plus the fact, where do you go from Cyprus ? North to the Turkish side, well not if you dont want to get arrested!, East to Tel Aviv... NE to Beirut,... South to Suez (gateway to the pirate capital of the world). Its not really as if Cyprus has loads of secluded ancourages in bays with Tavernas. Most of the secluded bays you would want to vist (such as Paphos old harbour) are frequented by fishermen. Generally they are nasty bunch who consider it there god given right to do what they like, how they like, for free and all laws/rules are not relevent to them. My friend moored in what could be construed as the entrance to the 'fishermans area', they went mad, shouting and screaming, threating all sorts of things. Later on in the night, most of the pleasure yachts somehow got set adrift amoungst all the shallow rocks. The police reckoned it must of been a drunken tourist prank!

Hi Paul,

Yes, we cannot speak highly enough of Agios Nikolaos marina and the staff. Mooring fees are very reasonable and include water and electricity. Shower/WC facilities are the best we have ever encountered in any marina, here in the UK or abroad. Our boat is currently based in Agios Nikolaos marina for the winter. Hope this helps.

Tony

Thanks, I am going to pop over there in a week or twos time and have a good look. When you say 'good price' is that implying that it is possible to negotiate below the published price list or was it infering to the fact that the price is good based on the facilities etc ?
