Flushed the loo and contents of the bowl pumped around the floor. the body is cracked. Where is the best place to get a new loo without spending millions of pennies?.
Also as I have a leaking hatch which has leaked a ruined the ceiling material and carpet. where is the best place to purchase hatches.

I think this is the start of a refit. umm carpet, ceiling materials. re upholstery,
I wonder if I have started a job which I will wish in three months I never started.

When it comes marine toilets, "good" and "cheap" are mutually exclusive terms. If you're gonna keep the boat for more than a couple more years, you'll spend about half as much in long run if you bite the bullet and go for a bit more quality than the cheapest. You don't have to spend 1000 pounds to get a decent toilet...but you do have to spend a bit more than 100 pounds. If you were in the US, I'd recommend the Raritan PH II, but I don't know how competitive the price is in the UK with comparable UK and European toilets. However, the Blake Lavac, which IS a UK product, would also be an excellent choice.

If I were you, I'd also replace the hoses...it's as good a time to do it as you're gonna find till the next time you have to replace the loo.

Just to agree with Penny - loos can be a minefield - I had 2 in Bambola both Lavac - when I got her 12 years ago the Lavac beside my cabin had to be replaced because the bowl had problems...

Installed the cheapest around - same cost as the new lavac bowl - Since then I have installed 6 new loos in that compartment - the latest is a Jabsco - seems OK since Thailand.. I am/was a liveaboard. The Lavac in the forward head is still working perfectly- once needed a set of new seals and a service kit for the pump!!! -

The other pitfall is the cost of service spares - the cheapest loos have the most expensive service kit - so you need to check the cost of the service kits whilst you decide...

My loo was as cheap as I could manage as I was poor at the time, so it was a bit homemade. I got a china bowl from the local 2nd hand chandlery, and the smallest seat and lid that B&Q sell to fit. I fitted a small bilge-type pump to the inlet and used the existing Mk5 for the outlet. You have to run both pumps more-or-less simultaneously to flush, which is not as hard as it sounds, but it has the advantage that there is almost nothing to go wrong (touch wood). No special seals or valves, just two bog standard pumps. (Sorry, couldn't resist that one.)

Whatever you use, I'd recommend a ceramic bowl for longevity and cleanliness.

Try Lee sanitation for spares. they will sell you the very parts needed to fix a problem rather than a kit to replace everything (if you so desire)not sure re competiveness re loo purchase?

Loo troubles

Don't buy one made by R&M under their own name or for anyone else. My new one failed within a year: The pump, seat, changeover valve and handle all split. R&M said there was nothing wrong with the plastic but refused to return the parts so that I could get an independent assessment before taking them to court.

Hi Rob, my Baby Blake leaks around the top of the outlet pump when you flush. Bit unhygenic but the spares pack is around 90 pounds. I think it is just a bit of graphite packing that I need.

How can I get hold of Lee sanitation? They sound like my next call.

(Mind you, I think the loo is 64 years old. It could do with a clean as well.)

We have had a Jabsco for many years. It's very reliable, just keep it well lubricated with cooking oil, or if you are keen, take the top off the pump once a year and apply the proper stuff (Headmistress will tell you what it's called). Parts are available everywhere and it's easy to strip down and rebuild. No problem.

Come to Switzerland!
Since the Swiss recently ruled that loos that allow the contents to go directly into the lakes are banned (as from 2002) there are perfectly usable toilets lined up outside rubbish tips awaiting to be trown away in many harbours! So what do people now do, well bucket it and chuck it, so what happens next time your swimming in a Swiss lake, you come eye to eye with a big brown turd! Progress my eye!
