Thanks for that - I know that vertical windlasses ( capstans??) need a stripper - but as most horizontals have a decent fall ( in my case 1 metre) - that would do the job. On the Neco I am restoring and modifying to a double unit - there is a pawl to arrest the gypsy and hold the chain and anchor from falling - while the warping drume are in use - but I can see no provison for a stripper.This pawl is on an extenede shaft - which also confuses the issue !
I have a Neco 872 windlass and it does have a chain stripper. I have never used this windlass. I bought it with the hopes of converting it for my boat but the gypsy is for a larger chain than I have (mine is 3/8"). I had hoped to find parts but that has proven to be difficult.
