Hello,

I am looking for manuals and circuit diagrams and troubleshooting hints for a neco NM 692 om. It is installed on my boat with a rotary dirve motor.
The motor works in both directions but the controller makes the boat turn only in one direction.

Thanks

Send a PM to Derek_Coventry.

He's an ex-Neco man who supplies spares for & services old Neco units and he'll be able to give you some idea to what may be wrong.

If you don't get a reply from him send me a PM & I'll dig out his phone Number.

I had the Neco 692 but I scrapped the ancient electronics whilst keeping the superbely robust drive unit. It is possible (with the right electronic jiggery pokery) to marry it up to the Raymarine st6000 control "course computer" You then get all the advantages of the modern set-up, ie all the NMEA interfaces etc.

However I still have some spares for the NM692 such as brand new relays etc. If you are aiming to repair the existing set up these may be of use (PM me)

Neco troubleshooting

I wish I had read these posts some time ago, the relays could have helped somebody. But if anyone needs troubleshooting advice on Neco pilots my email now is derek207@btinternet.com and I still have a few spares left.

Derek,
I have a Neco 692 model 35DR8 on my Nauticat. I installed 2 new relays from Tyco because the pilot only worked occasionally and the manual said that the relays could be the problem. However after installing the new relays the driveunit do not respond at all to the control unit - I must have loosened a wire somewhere, but can't find it. When I manually press the relay lever the motor starts correctly. If you by any change have a spare drive unit I am interested. Mail to sandbyvej64@gmail.com

Hi!
I know that this is an old thread but I just came across this. I have such an autopilot on by boat as well. It works find but I consider to install a modern Raymarine autopilot unit as well.
Could you give me a hint how you did this?

Best regards,
Bernhard

Welcome to the forum Bernard.

I have a Raymarine ACU 400 autopilot. I sent my NECO motor to Hudson Marine, they converted the motor to run from the ACU400 and tested the motor. I dont know what they did but all the devices in the top of the motor are gone and I just have 4 wires: motor + and -, clutch + and -. Easy installation into the ACU400.

Mine became problematic and the issue turned out to be the brushes. There are 3 plates around the motor end housing and under these the brushes can be found. Mine were good but the commutator was black with carbon dust which had smeared all over the rings. A good clean with cotton buds and some solvent I had onboard, and the motor was like new.

The conversion was about £150 around 4 years ago. If you are going to do this, then buy a new model ACU400. I wouldn't rely on the motor for a round the world or transatlantic voyage. It may work or it may not, but I think due to age they are prone to failure. If I was planning on a long distance voyage, I would buy a Jeffa motor and fit that. I am happy with my choice for coastal sailing.

Does the ACU400 drive the motor without problems?
According to the Neco manual the motor has 1/8 HP which is about 90W.
I couldn't find how many output the ACU400 can drive but compared to the original Raymarine motors 90 W is the upper limit.

The ACU400 powers my NECO motor without any issues. Mine is 24V and the ACU400 is fused at 30A and is rated for continual use at that load. There is also a 30A fuse on one of the new wires inside the motor housing.

I really don't know how the ACU400 delivers the voltage to the motor but it is not constant, I believe it pulses voltage at some frequency. It can't be measured with a voltmeter, it requires an oscilloscope. I guess you are wondering if the motor will burn out, can't help with that.

I have a problem with my MK692 MK3 12V and googled this forum with many great experts. Maybe someone can help. Since a 2 years ago heavy thunderstorm the autopilot does not work correctly. Switched on via control unit the 5 Amp fuse blows immediatly.
Last year beginning the season it workef for one trip about 8 hours long and then it stopped working again. I am here in Greece without professional help only equipped with a multimeter and soldering possibility. The autopilot was built into the Amel Maramu in 1988 and worked without problems since I bought it 2015. I have the English Installation & Operating Instructions. It is a baskc installation with Control Unit, Compass and Drive Unit.
