Heres a neat idea I came across yesterday, it's piece of bungie cord wound around a docking line, to take up any shock loads when coming along side... it worked really well. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I think I've seen those commercially available, so it's a great idea.

They are, i use them and they are good at preventing 'snatching' not cheap though.
