Neat idea to pull fenders up...

Never seen this before, but was watching the comings and going from our foredeck yesterday when a local yacht glides by single handed. He had the type of fenders that have a fixing eye at both the top and bottom and had connected a single second rope to the bottom eye of each fender. At each fender he had tied a knot, and he ran the rope back to the cockpit. To get them from the vertical to the horizontal, just pulled the bottom line taut and they all swung through 90 degrees in unison. Admittedly still on the outside of the boat, but I thought it was quite a neat alternative to running up and down the side decks, especially if single handed.

When we went to look at our current boat this system was rigged on it, and both the surveyor and I were impressed. When I showed it to my wife, and she quickly figured out that she would not have to leave the cockpit to store all the fenders for quick trips to our local bays, it was deemed 'a good thing' and has remained in place.

One year of ownership on and we won't be removing it soon.

I have gradually stopped doing pointless things on boats over the last 4 decades and putting fenders away is one of them. I do lift them off the rails to the side deck but love this idea which is even lazier.

Fortunately we have dedicated fender bins for 8 in the massive anchor locker .
Aesthetically for us leaving them dangling would be like fitting a top box to a Lamborghini.

For good reasons, I reckon. Is that chap never going anywhere else than in his home berth?
Adjusting the position and the height of the fenders depending on the contingent needs would be a nightmare, with that setup... :ambivalence:
