Nearest Non EU Port

Interestingly we had Guardia Finanza round the anchorage yesterday .Local Ligurian bank hol WE so in Italian terms a busy day .
We were the only boat flying a red .
The ensign is on the STB rear 1/4 .They took a bee line to us approaching from the port bow side so we’re blind sided by the ensign .Just about to parallel up and they spotted it .

Once they saw it I could see the disappointment in there faces , they went off and “ did “ a few Italians instead.

They did not see the name it’s on the transom .Aside we are on there “ system “ anyhow as tax paid from previous encounters..

So are “ red “ targets or time wasters from there pov .

I mean you are just passing by aren’t you ?

When we were in France “ done “ 3 x by Douanes they never asked for VAT proof , just ins, reg , “ visiting port “ , passport.

Haha, thanks all for the responses. It looks like the best plan is a return to Gibraltar, escaping Tunisian corruption…… food for thought!! Don’t you just love Brexit…
Not sure Gibraltar does it for you. Last time it came up on this forum someone said Gibraltar has some sort of “transit” status so was not equivalent to popping into the UK.

Gib is also a long long way from Antibes. It is a long way from Mallorca and we are much closer ! Tunisia ballpark 400 gib double that. Tunisia gets you a nice Corsica / Sardinia cruise out one side back the other. Gib gets a flat Spanish coast which is the same both ways. If gib works it could be cheaper and faster to put it on a truck.

Yes, it would make a lot more sense... Just seems a bit of a 'risky' place to go, people are giving mixed messages on it.

Just wondering if the most cost-effective solution for a Brit with a non-EU based 50’ boat based in Antibes might be to time it when a major service is needed and truck back to UK; have work done at <CdA rates; truck back and continue enjoying the boat in the sun.

Sail to Italy is not far and refreshingly cheap .

doesnt get you out of the eu though - which was the point of the question in the thread, ie whats the easiest way to reset the EU 18 month TA clock for a boat based in the south of france ?

Having done it personally there is no issue - you just need an agent to meet you and deal with the paperwork and officialdom.

Home - Yacht Services Tunisia was who I used.
kim@ys-tunisia.com

The fees were about e1200 but fuel was 78 cents a litre so it balanced out

Hurricane will tell you do not attempt it without an agent. You will be there for days and pay over various "gifts"

Was replying to post #25 , the truck it up / down Fr .

And from experience the IT s at the mo ignore boats flying a red , which I thought you would elude from my post #21 ??

Plenty of local fish to catch and fry it seems .

Lo
Not my experience, I’m going back to France for a lift & clean, I’ve tried 5 Italian yards, all bloody expensive, Imperia want 1800+tax just to lift.
Amico Loano have a 25 T crane and charge €800 for a lift , block off etc and lift in .+ Tax .
A 18 T we use that .The 800 T SY hoist I suspect would be more .

BTW, an added bonus of Tunisia is the cheaper fuel cost.
Though I heard of folks who had troubles with clogged filters, so also for arranging the refill it's worth using a reliable agent.
This was my experience of getting fuel in Tunisia - ok it was a while ago but a lot of hassle.

No actual pump - a little man waggled a hand pump.
I wanted 3000 litres
The truck only had 1000 litres - "how do I know there is 1000 litres in that truck" - I asked.
Just trust me they said!!!

That second truck had a pump but no means of powering it.
Eventually they asked me to run my generator so that they could power their pump.

Now - make your mind up about Tunisia.
Its OK but as jrudge says - get an agent.
In fact, that fuel delivery was WITH and agent so it isn't what its "cracked up to be".

Mine was a pump on the fuel quay.
