Near miss in the Solent yesterday??

As overtaking boat it was his duty to keep clear of course. Although everybody is required to do what they can to avoid collision, which it sounds like you did. And sadly, not all sailing skippers realise that "overtaking boat" trumps "power gives way to sail".

Not sure I'd class the following boat as in 'overtaking' mode.. more like 'following' mode unexpectedly turning in to 'ramming' mode due to a sudden stop by the forward vessel, in turn due to the muppet in the dinghy ahead of the both of them

I don't generally see this, but I don't often go up rivers that have lots of dinghies around. I'm curious though - was there space for him to continue on the same tack instead of coming back towards you?

Yes, sorry I should have said that, there was circa 100 yards+ with no obstructions whatsoever!

I have sailed all my life and my last sail boat was a J24 which we heavily campaigned so believe me I am NOT against raggies! I am just against ignorant behaviour that could lead to boats or more importantly people being badly hurt.

Indeed, however the bravaria with full genny up had not seen the small GP14 tacking in front of me and not even sure he had seen me!

Not the same league, but pottering up the Hamble on Friday, and the boat in front slows/ stops as this tiny dinghy crosses the river. Ok, all well;some guy with wife and very young daughter out on the water. Two thirds of the way across the river, he tacks and heads back at 180 degrees, and clearly didnt look. WHY OH WHY do I see this so often??
The river in flood, and a Nimbus, probably single engined, is hurled into reverse,in an effort not to run straight over them. I kid you not, I really thought this dinghy was going to get crushed. The Nimbus is now side on being swept down the river, just misses the dinghy, mother clutching her young daughter.
I cant blame the mobo.. but the dinghy skipper damn nealry killed someone. Idiot.

Coming down the Hamble Monday morning we had what looked like a school boat pull out of Hamble Point Marina directly in to our path. Emergency turn out of the way. The helm was completely blinkered focusing directly ahead and to the right. The instructor with his back to the port side. Only saw us as I shouted out and took evasive action. Good training experience for our group to show some people just don't have an overall awareness of what's around them.
