Sorry : this is probably a silly thing staring me in the face but recently all my files in Excel and Word (XP) are categorised as "read only". Where does one switch back to normal operation please? I don't remember consciously having changed anything. Thanks.

Re: NB help Excel & Word

right click - properties - uncheck read only

as a batch, click on first file, press shift click on last file in directory - right click - properties - uncheck read only.

Re: NB help Excel & Word

Apparently the files which were giving me a problem were already unchecked. Some, again without doing anything, seem to be OK again. Maybe I have a virus. I'll see if there is a trend and if so will call upon your knowledge again.

Many thanks for your swift reply.

Re: NB help Excel & Word

If you ever copy them to a CD, and then back, they will return as R/O as a CD is a read only device ..

Hi

While the other posts are correctly telling you how to chacnge the read only flag they might not help you in this case. Am I right in thinking the read only tag is kind of greyed out?? This is a feature of XP when it has simple file sharing enabled it marks files are pseudo-read only although as far as saving files etc are concerned it won't have any effect (unless you are doing programming using the files). If for some reason you need to make then non-read only you need to turn off simple files sharing Open Windows Explorer then go Tools > Foder Options > View and scroll down the list to almost the bottom and un-check the the "Use simple file sharing". You will then have to create a share on the folder. I think this only effect XP machines with SP1 and those not connected to a domain. There is a Knowledge Base article on MSDN which I can find out if anybody is really interested!

Cheers

Neil

Thanks Neil. You are right about the option being greyed out. I have changed this as you suggested but have not yet tested it. I'll keep you (if you'll excuse the expression) posted.

By the way, welcome to the forum. Enjoy it.

John

PS. I've noticed that all my files under "My documents" have disappeared and are now re-appearing under my ISP provider's programme in "My Programs". What's going on?
