We have recently moved to Nazare in Portugaland are thinking about moving our boat here has anyone any experience of marina we know its a lot cheaper than Marinas in England. If anyone visiting Nazare please look us up be happy to share a glass of wine and chat.

Two marinas at Nazare. The town one is somewhat run down with (I'm told) disinterested staff now that Mike has retired. We used the club marina last time there, friendly English speaking staff and well run. Also closer to the town and reasonable bar/restaurant alongside.

I'll 2nd that. I've stayed at both. The club, which also sells fuel, was a delight, and as a visitor, slightly cheaper I think. The other was grim, very small pontoons, and very unconvenient for town. Best avoided.

After seeing the photo of someone surfing on a huge wave I wonder how the harbour entrance was tenable but its not always windy and wavey

Strangely, it's one of the very few "ports of refuge" on the west coast. The NW headland (surfing area) needs a fairly wide berth on approach in big seas but the harbour entrance is a fair distance from there.

There's a massive canyon just outside so the energy of the waves is dissipated.

I loved the old harbour bit; very tatty but with a charming Portuguese HM (who was very good at dealing with this interfering, old, English bloke who seemed to have got stuck there and then assumed the right to tell everyone what to do! I was very polite and then ignored him). Ten minute walk around to the other side but the only time I didn't enjoy the walk was in a F8. Pontoons were small but I'm only 32ft so no problem.

Is it a harbour you can sail out of just for the week end or do the locals just sail out and about in the area of the harbour taking into account the predominant northerlies

The port at Nazare is not much to look at but if you hang around a while you will find that it can be a little gem of a place. The pontoons at the far side opposite the club is home to a fantastic bunch a liveaboard cruisers. We spent nine months there in 2014/2015, planned to stay 2 nights!
You won't find that type of community at the club. There is also a good yard where you can do all your own work and there is an English chap by the name of Alec who has a workshop and is a skilled metal worker and diesel mechanic. He can assist with all kinds of repairs and maintenance. In addition there is a fantastic little bar run by the most lovely little chap called Louis. Chill out drink a sagres with the very friendly and mildly insane fisherman. Many happy memories and friends gained from our stop off here.

Just been to Marina to look at berth amazingly cheap. We used to pay over £11500 for birth in the Hamble, in Nazare its only 1700euros which includes electric, water and wi fi Mr Sailfree does that mean I can shop till I drop?

Similar experience. Spent 6 months there 2012/2013. Like you we only intended to stay a few nights but the weather took charge. Even had a hurrican go through which swept the beach into the town. The Port marker at the entrancne was swept away. Has it been replaced yet ? Alec & Dodi became good friends during our stay. Mike (mentioned above) & his wife Sally also became good friends who took us on a weekly shopping trips to the supermarkets. Mike was Ok you just needed to know how to handle him. Thought Loius would have retired by now. Yes the marina is run down & not in the best state of repair but its cheap & like anything in life its what you make of it. Not for the prim & proper brigade. Knew nothing about the canyon until we arrived so did some research whilst there into the Canyon & the massive waves which get generated. I assumed it was the tunnelling effect of the deep Canyon that caused the waves but they are actually caused by the inshore Northern currents running into the canyon currents. Elder was the Portugeuse marina manager when we were there but we heard he developed a brain tumour. Heard nothing futher about him. Are the showers working yet ? :) :)
