Navy gets big boats to play with...

I've no idea what the figures are but I bet that while the frontline end has been suffering cuts the admin fellows have been increasing. Someone on here is bound to know.

2) The armed forces have a massive ( in my view very inefficent ) government civil service section that " supports" them. Much too much or the defence money is spent on these support, paper work people

[/ QUOTE ] Thats me /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif and it costs the MOD at lot less to employ me in a suit than when I was in uniform.

THis needs a serious streamlining so more cash goes where it is really needed.

[/ QUOTE ] Err we have done that, it was called "Front Line First" along with dozens of other defence reviews over the last 20 years. However I am pleased to report we are now putting back some of those people to ensure our service personal have the best moral, welfare and pastoral care to meet there needs.

I agree that these carriers will need escorts aka the new Darings, But where will the money come from to allow for the likes of the Caribeen guardships? You also have to look at the replacement of the Trident fleet at £25-£35B. I didn't know the country was that cash rich!

Pete all I can say is that as a tax payer I've one point of view but as an ex-service man I'm very very sympathetic. I tend to jump in sometimes when I don't know all the facts, but there must be masses of people like me that can't wade through all the hype to find out what the real situation is. My guess is that very few people really know what's going on. If these forums can help by real people who are actually involved telling outsiders what is really happening... I think that's got to be a good thing.
