I find the paper roll models (which won't be on the stand!) are a lot better to use in practice.

You can tear off the piece of paper and either write it into your log or leave it to one side to assimilate later. A lot easier than trying to read a screen on a bouncing boat!

Purchase one that receives both 518 & 490 khz. Mine (Furuno) can only receive either, not both and this is a real pain.

Don't buy a Furuno version if you want to receive Niton. I bought one a couple of years ago and it has rarely received Niton, whilst receives stations from much further afield. Furuno claim this is due to Niton broadcasting a a very noisy signal and there doesn't seem to be any solution. They now sell a dual frequency version but as far as I know it still has the same problem.

I can't recommend the ICS Navtex 6 plus too highly. It gives a great sense of confidence about knowing not only the weather but important activity at sea. Recent buoy changes in Princes Channel in the Thames for example plus it does so much more!

Mine is hooked into the chart plotter and autopilot and therefore it repeats all key information, position, distance to waypoint, track etc, plus it records full log details every fifteen minutes.

It has a logical set up procedure and is easy to use but the more you learn about it the more you find it can do!

Are you aware that the Niton signal letter has changed and that you need to change the set up of your Navtex. Mine's ICS so I can't help in detail but I'm certain Furuno can tell you how to do it.
