I have had a few problems getting my Nasa PC Navtex to work (previous post).

Nasa have sent me new software which is much easier to use and does enable some reception - but all I am getting currently is the Dutch and German coastguards - there is no coverage here and weather for the German Bight is not top of the priority list in the north of Scotland.

What do others get - I at least expected to get Portpatrick, Malin Head and some of the English stations. How much difference does antenae position make?

Is this reception typical of Navtex?

I was also intending getting an SSB receiver to get RTTY - would this be a good move?

Have you enabled your receiver to record / display Cullercoats (G) or Portpatrick (O)? You should be able to get Rogoland (L) as well. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The new software has a button for 'all' stations and all messages which you can then filter to get what you want - if its there!

I have tried out to seaward but my harbour is relatively exposed anyway.

I bought a NASA HF3 SSB receiver and fitted it at Easter. My aerial is very basic (the shrouds) but I do get a fairly good RTTY signal from Hamburg on my boat in Greece. I also get Navtex from Greece and Croatia reliably but cant pick up any weatherfax. Im going to try and improve the aerial on my next visit but overall Im very pleased with the setup. The Lite version of Meteoscan that NASA bundle with the receiver seems OK but does seem to have a max limit on the ammount of data it will display/buffer. Its probably a couple of hours but if transmissions are in the middle of the night its tricky to pick them up (I use the scehedling feature of XP to switch on Meteoscan at the right time and this seems to overcome ithe problem) I thought Id also be able to listen to world service but the transmissions have all but stopped so its data only really.

After the last few threads on Navtex, I went and bought the Furuno jobbie.

Wired it up at the w/e, and it went berserk.

Messages were pouring, almost too fast to read. It has the Auto function that when wired up to the GPS, it will get messages from 'Local' navtex stations.

Will have to set it onto manual I think to limit the flo.

It works 1000 time better than the NAsa machine.

I have received weather forecasts from Nova Scotia on my nasa pc navtex. I bet you can't beat that by 1000 times.

I'm still convinced I've got a reception/aerial problem - but I'm too much of a technoprole to sort it out /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif.

I was thinking of getting the Nasa HF3 set - but I may have a look at Ebay first. One thing at a time - I'd just like to get this Navtex working properly first before I embark on something else.

having seen the amount of info from the Furuno, I agree with you that the Nasa aerial is probably not so hot.

Sell your Nasa on Ebay, you should get £100 plus for it. And get the Furuno or the other £350 unit.

The information that comes down the Navtex is preety good now, and its worth having.

Good luck

(Just got a weather forecast from MArs, 1,000,000 times better!!!)
