I replaced my Navtex antenna in the winter and then heard nothing.......

I was in a port way up the Villaine so assumed it was just losses being a long way inshore, later this year I have been out a few times at sea and never got a message. So given various bits of web advice, I neded to know if the receiver was any good and so I stuck a longish bit of wire in the antenna socket and have been happily receiving signals, albeit at night.

I know the weather is grand with a big high pressure over most of us, but it proves the ebay antenna was rubbish, if a bit of wire can do a better job. Anyone got any ideas how to improve the antenna to work day time without spending £150 on a furuno replacement?

Thoughts gratefully received,

ps tried wire onto guard wires and without, seems to be just as happy without on both 490 and 518kHz
