Hi

I have just purchased a Navman Tracker 5570 and have seen a c-map card for sale on e-bay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170766504255&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

does anyone here know if it will work with my plotter. It states in the manual that it will accept the following C-Map chart cards:-

NT, NT+, NT-MAX and NT-MAX2.

Im new to this GPS Chartplotter thing (used traditional charts til now) and dont want to be buying something that doesnt work, but the seller is unsure if it will work or not.

Anyone out there shed a bit of light on this for me ASAP as the auction ends tomorrow.

PS If there is anyone out there that Has a compatable chart card for sale that covers Ireland/UK I would be very interested in it.

Thanks for your time!

One look at this, and all will be revealed :)

Damn, I take that back, the 5507 isn't listed.. :(

However, reading there, and IIRC some of the Navman plotters don't take the newer Max charts which that one seems to be, it only takes the older NT charts, which that one appears not to be...

Your excerpt from the manual refers to NT Max, which stumps me somewhat, I always thought it was NT OR Max, not "NT Max", so i'm probably now becoming less help, sorry! :(

Edit Mk2 : After having a techie chat with our C-map programmer - That one on ebay is an SD card, the Northstar 557 needs to take the C-Card, so you wouldn't be able to utilise that card with your unit...

That ebay auction shows a C-Map card on SD format. I have a Navman 6500 and it takes the C-Map card like THIS one. From the picture HERE of the 5507, I would say you need the same.

So in short. NO :D

Do you really need the whole UK and Ireland?

A smaller area will be available for less if you can get away with it. What area will you be boating in?

I will only be boating within the Strangford Lough/Irish Sea NI Coastline, IOM and possibly scotland. Just this card seemed good value.

Just a wondering if the built-in maps would do and does anyone know if this plotter is really any good as I couldnt find a good review on it. Sadly bought on a whim due to it being within my budget.

To answer that, the Navman gear was aimed at the budget end of the market, and that has made itself known as the years have gone by (Navman has ceased to be, now only Northstar). Getting it serviced or repaired if there is a problem might prove tricky, but there are those with Navman kit who have had it for years with no problem.

The base map preloaded is definitely no good for marine navigation.

Keep an eye out on ebay for CMAP NT+ cards for the relevant areas, but as neale mentions, you're looking for the larger oblong orange card as oppose to the smaller SD (Blue or Black usually) or CF (Black usually) cards.

The card advertised appears to be a C-Map NT Max card and should indeed work with your plotter if the manual says so but could well be out of date. Before you buy look at Jepperson's site. You can now buy one card (I have the EW-11010) which does all western european coasts which may well cost a bit more but will be more comprehensive and up to date.

I have been very happy with my 6500. Not sure what all the differences are but the 5507 is newer, takes CMap Max cards that offer more features, and is AIS compatible.

Don't know what you paid for it but I think as long as you got it for a good price you'll be happy with it.

I have changed boats and plotter and have an old c-map NT+ chart of Ireland hanging around, last used in a Navman Plotter. It is M-EW-C217 which covers the Island of Ireland and includes the Isle of Man and the Clyde. I bought it on 29 March 2004, but I doubt much has changed except lights and the inside of harbours. It took me nicely around the island four years ago

Yours for £50.00 , pm me if interested

Except that his plotter takes the Jeppesen C-Card, and the card being sold is an SD card, so it physically wont fit in the plotter.

A brand new local area C-map MAX will cost you in the region of £115, wide area around £200.00. (Wide area would cover the UK and Ireland)

If you were looking to buy new, I would suggest looking at the older NT+ maps which your plotter would support - these tend cover a larger area for the local maps at the same price as the MAX local charts...as Neale says though, they don't have a lot of the newer features that the MAX charts do.

Alternatively, keep scouring Ebay but ensure it's the orange oblong card...any doubts, feel free to P/M me!

Just to be clear. The Orange ones are, I think, MAX cards. NT+ cards are, or at least used to be, black.

As long as it's a C Card and not an SD card you'll be fine. NT+ or MAX it shouldn't matter but there is no point in paying extra for the MAX features if you are not going to use them.

The built-in maps aren't any good really.

It's a good plotter. The Navman plotters are very intuitive to use, and very user friendly. I had one of the earlier 5600 models for a couple of years and it was great. The 5507 plotter you've bought has full VGA screen resolution (640x480 pixels - 4 times as many as most small plotters) giving a crisp clear chart and excellent graphics. And it's AIS compatible, if you're that way inclined.

If your boating is fairly local, just get a local chart cartridge, either C-Map NT+ or C-Map MAX, for about £100, but be sure to specify "C-card" as the cartridge type.

Many thanks to everyone for their replies. I guess I will just have to check the plotter out when it arrives and hopefully it should do my job. I have spoked to a few guys in my club who have them and they say that they're a good job and well worth the money that I have paid for it..

Finally got the Chartplotter delivered and to my delight the company that I had bought it from upgraded me to the Northstart 657 (which includes depthsounder/fishfinder) result!

From first use I must say that the interface is very intuitive and easy to navigate all the menus. The screen is brilliant and to be honest seeing it I would not like to go below 5" as I think it will be just hard enough to see at times.

Connecting the plotter to the power could not have been easier, I was able to make a connection with croc-clips and a piece of wire to a battery booster that I have and I have ran it for about 4 hours so far without a recharge.

The GPS antenna provided was not a Navman/Northstar OEM but I have it connected in my house and I am getting a fix on the plotter display. It only took about 15 seconds from startup to get this fix, so I am delighted with this as well.

All in all so far I must say that the plotter is brilliant, but time will tell when I get it installed on the boat and use it on the water. My main worry is whether it will stand the test of time and hopefully not be as unreliable as some people have reported.

Many thanks for all your help - now off to search again for a reasonably priced c-map card for my area..

Hi folks. I appreciate this is an old thread.
I purchased a boat out in Greece. The chart plotter wasnt installed. I cannot ask the previous owner any questions as unfortunately it was purchased from a deceased estate. It’s my first boat and I’m new to everything. I found the chart plotter uninstalled. But it is brand new. Still has the plastic film across the screen. Since I’m new to sailing and wish to develop good practises. I will be using paper charts as my primary navigation and have a number of devices to run navionics etc on. Instead of potentially purchasing a new chart plotter. Does anyone have any advice on trying to find the most recent chart updates for this system? Or does the hive mind suggest getting a new one? I saw one on eBay going for £200 that’s nowhere in the condition of this. (I also have an AIS receiver that was hooked up at some point).
Any thoughts on the matter are appreciated .
