Navman Tracker 5500, no GPS fix

I was given this unit from 2002 by a forumite in the knowledge it didn't work but l tried it at the weekend and it does fire up and you can flip through the pages ok but the unit doesn't seem to get a fix from the |GPS. Could the GPS be faulty (Separate plug in type with a small screw in thread) or is it more software related. Its not urgent but would make a good back up. Anyone had the same problem?

Leave it on somewhere where the antenna has a good view of the sky. Leave it for a few hours. Sometimes the inner battery dies and it has to recalibrate itself from a standing start without knowing, even vaguely, where on earth it is. If it eventually finds itself, you need to work out how to change that internal battery. I'm sure google will have the answer.
