navionics vs memory map on android

Hi

The memory map application is a bit clunky, especially changing charts. However it is easier to create routes, and modify them. The memory map app also allows the display to close down, but continue tracking, saving battery life. HOWEVER, the Navionics charts cover France, Belgium and Holland as well as the UK . Tucked up in the East Coast, we try to get over to France Belgium Holland every year if we can.

BOTH have good points, Navionics route planning is quite frankly carp! Hopefully one day they will get it to work.....

Regards

Ian

+1 to the above.
Also:
Memory map allows sharing routes or tracks onto you PC version, easily. Pc version can print etc.
Memory maps are pictures of maps ie raster, and you move/zoom between different maps with different scales as required. In contrast,, Navionics have seamless vector maps with embedded data eg depths, light patterns, user generated comments etc
Navionics maps stay up to date, Memory maps are for specific set/year only then you need to pay again.

Navionics downloads them, yes. This is so you can use them offline. You can however delete and re-download them which, I assume, will give you the latest charts. There is nothing that says you only bought a specific year's edition of the chart, etc.

In contrast, with memory map you get a specific year's charts and need to pay again if you want to get a newer version.

I don't see how Navionics will be able to sustain this business model. At some stage, people will be happy with their current app version but remain entitled to a lifetime of free chart updates. In other words, Navionics will face everlasting chart update and hosting costs but no further revenue from those users. Rather than making apps more expensive, they should limit the age of charts you can download up to your date of purchase, with maybe a chart upgrade in-app purchase to extend that date. And sell the apps at £10 again.

Not a great lover of Navionics customer service but use thier UK and Holland on my smart fone and more recently aquires 7" tablet. Was out on a mates boat yesterday and it stood up well to comparison with his built in system which had a much more limited chart area.
Once I figured out the delete and reload on the charts, advice from the forum, I,m reasonably happy.
Wouldn,t look a gift horse etc.
Not sure why the route planer gets such bad press, but I only use it for daydreaming anyway.

Warning: Navionics Apps - a waste of money.

Navionics don't sustain this business model. You purchase the App, then receive an Android system update and it stops working and Navionics just say "buy an entirely new App".

The fall back is their license agreement which states: "Navionics is not obligated to support superseded or discontinued versions of Products or to upgrade or maintain Products for use on new releases/versions of your Device or its operating system. Some or all features of your Product may fail to function on Devices other then the Device for which you originally purchased it."

This is the response that I received today: "The app Europe West app has been removed from the Android Market due to the release of the new Navioncs Mobile single app Europe
The new Navionics Mobile single app is not an update to the previous regional apps, but an entirely new app product.
This app will feature a much larger coverage area, updated chart data, as well as many new features.
If you would like to continue to get the most updated information and features, Navionics recommends upgrading to the new single app. The single app will require an additional purchase and can be obtained through the Android Market.
Please be advised that the original apps are no longer being supported, and will no longer receive updates.
The app you bought has been on the market for over 2 years and as explained earlier it was necessary to move to a totally new version to keep developing the App and add new features, that were not possible to include with the build of the original apps.
For your reference you can find Navionics’ EULA clicking here www.navionics.com/end-user-license-agreement"

So be warned: if you purchase a Navionics App, it may suddenlyt stop working when you receive a new version of your Android operating system and Navionics will just say "spend more money on a new App". Its an outrageous way to do business! Perhaps Navionics would like to explain this strategy?

I'm not sure thats entirely fair. You are forgetting that with Navionics you get a very large number of charts which would cost a fortune from UKHO and would still need replacing every 5 years or so when they updated and stopped the running NTMs. You are expecting an awful lot from Navionics for your £40 or so - even replacing it every 2 years or so is way cheaper than UKHO.

Well it was billed as "the only marine app you will ever need", when clearly this is not the case. For me it was only a back up to printed charts plus Navionics Gold, but it has been taken away. I don't know of any other apps that are just wiped out once your operating system auto updates. Cost is frankly irrelevant. If all Apps failed at this point, either nobody would purchase them or we would all have to cancel our system updates and work with old operating systems.

the really odd thing about navionics is why it will work on some android tablets but not others. As far as I am aware, the other two chart systems work on all android tablets. Makes me wonder about the software set up.

Search the forum on this, as you may find there is a solution. My original Navionics App has been moved across and now on third Android phone. Log on to Android Playstore online via a PC (not the phone) and you should see this as uninstalled software. Click install and it is pushed out onto the phone. Sorted. (but agree not obvious first time)

I completely agree. I just got an email from them telling me to pay to get their new version of the chart set I spent a lot of money on only a couple of years ago. I'd like to hear about alternative charts that ores have found useful as I don't trust Navionics to not rip me off again. Paper charts are way cheaper and more reliable

Raster vs Vector

Worth considering the differences. Raster is "Clunky" compared to vector, but you're seeing what the marine cartographer intended. Vector is seamless, but late rendered... meaning you see what your tablet/plotter considers you should see. Best illustrated with some real examples:

I would say use vector plotters/apps, but if you sail in shallow waters or cut across mudbanks back up with paper charts or a raster app/plotter. It's cheap enough to use both. The Memory Map charts are good, as are our ones.

#Navionics rip off

I'm surprised Navionics haven't been taken to task for this - and that they seem to have got away with it. I put it to them via Twitter that this now gives them the right to cancel all their products when operating systems upgrade and force us to buy new ones. I can't think of any other software vendor that wouldnt at least give a discount on a new purchase. Why am I not reading articles in yachting magazines about this topic?

Not sure about the statement that these two programs will run on any tablet. You need to check your version of Android. I had an old Viewpad 7" Tablet (which also had a mobile phone built in) but it was running Version 2.2.2 and I was told that it would not run Navionics and Memory Map could not tell me if it would run or not.

I ended up installing Marine Navigator and downloaded Visit my Harbour

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.kemiro.marinenavigator2&hl=en

http://www.visitmyharbour.com/download-android-charts/

Around £6 for Program and £15 for 800 charts

Same experience here. Navionics ended in 2014 their support of the PC app of the UK/Ireland/France/Belgium/Holland chart but also updated partly with empty parts. So now the map I bought in 2012 is both old and partly empty.
I am looking now for a reliable company.
