Navionics- trouble getting pesky area downloader right

I can usually maintain the illusion that I'm reasonably competent in the use of electronics but my Hudl is driving me mad.
The problem; after buying chart coverage, Navionics invites you to size the area you want to download by moving the blue pins on the corners of a rectangle. I just can't get it to the size I want and have resorted to doing it piecemeal-probably with gaps. It feels like trying to pin down a drop of mercury in a wine glass. Anyone know how to fix a corner and expand the shape from there? Or any other technique that works.

The same also applied with updating charts (CF Cards) using their app - it takes 4 or 5 goes to select the entire UK. I questioned this at Libs and they said it was quite normal.

Is was much easier when the system recognised which area your card covered and downloaded the relevant data.

I'm not at all sure what the reasoning behind the change was

I 'think' the reason was that if you were 'on the boat' then you would probably only download the relevant updates for the area you are at and so reduce the size/time of the download - especially if on a mobile data connection.

Now they only have one physical product to manufacture and ship, for suppliers to hold in stock, and for chandlers to keep on the shelves, and it doesn't get out of date while in the supply chain or sitting on the shelf.

On my Android Xperia the "pulling the pins" thing works really well. Once an area is stored on the tablet it shows as much brighter on the master chart when I zoom out so I can quickly see whether I have got all the coastline I need and see that there are no gaps. Of course, if they were gaps because I'd set the pins wrongly I'd just set the pins to encompass that non-highlighted area and download the missing bit.

My Experia is a bigger screen than the Hudl which must make things a bit easier I guess.

Even though the cards are blank when you physically buy them I thought you still selected a 'product' rather than just highlighting a bit water you wanted a chart for

Not with Navionics Plus. As far as I know, there is only one SKU, which simply contains a unique code proving that you handed over some money to a chandler or other supplier.

The first time you connect it, you have to choose which region you want it to be ("Europe", "USA", "UK and Holland", etc) and Navionics will then record that against your unique code in their database. As far as I know there is no way of changing that, so in effect the card is now "locked" to that region and they will only let you download charts within that region. You can drag and select different areas to download, but you can't change the region record for that card. But the record is in their database, not something inherent to the blank card on the shelf.

That's Navionics Plus; maybe they had an earlier scheme where the cards were pre-allocated to regions? Seems a bit pointless though if you still have to download the data.

1GB, preferably 2GB in my experience

Amount of space actually needed depends on if you want the community edits or the 'sonar' charts as well as the normal chart info.
