Navionics on Ipad with depth, this is good

+2.
If only one tenth of the times we had a technical debate on any bit of kit we could have had the producer contribution, the forum would have been way more interesting. :encouragement:

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I certainly don't want to step on any toes or breach any forum guidelines. So, if you have any questions regarding my products it is perhaps best if you contact me directly rather than post them here.

I am happy to help out here on the forum with any questions about marine electronics in general as best I can, and about the Navionics app which I really love. For the record, other than being in their beta program I have no affiliation with Navionics.

Cheers, Steve.

Hi Guys,

Just a bit more info on the Navionics app.

Here's a link that shows the Navionics 'Sonar Charts Live' feature in action:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VSZ4OIUkxM

If you search YouTube for 'navionics sonarcharts live demo' you'll find quite a few videos from real boaties.

Another thing that is important to know is that it doesn't 'alter' the original chart. Electronic charts are made up of several 'layers' which can be turned on or off, though the ability to do so is determined by the creators of the software or manufacturers of the chartplotter.

When you generate your own depth contours, they are only created for the area of the bottom you pass over and that part of the original depth contour layer turns transparent. When you watch the video in the link above it will all click.

At any time you can turn the 'community layer' on or off, thereby revealing the original or replacing the relevant areas with your own contours.

The data you gather yourself is stored on your device and it is a very high resolution layer, meaning that it is very detailed. If you choose the 'share my data' option in the settings, you contribute your soundings to Navionics for inclusion in the community layer. Something well worth knowing about this process is that the community layer is of a lower resolution, thereby less detailed for reasons of file size of the community layer.

The upshot is that is that if you get a new phone or tablet and load Navionics on it, you won't have your highly detailed contours unless you have backed up your old device or use a data transfer app to move everything from old device to new. This is crucial if your a keen fisherman, as a detailed chart of the bottom is invaluable for planning a fishing trip... especially if your vessel is foot powered like mine ;)

Cheers, Steve.
