My subscription expired yesterday because they jacked the price up quite a bit. Previously, when the subscription expired, the charts remained, albeit no longer updatable. This no longer applies I see. No subscription, no access to charts. Just made the switch to C map a bit easier 🤔.

Did you download maps for offline use before your sub expired? If not then this is likely the reason.

My subscription on Android expired almost a year ago and I still use it All saved routes etc still fully usable and I can still transfer them to my Axiom 9 MFD on which the chart subscription expired more than 5 years ago. I get the below page when I open the app, click NOT NOW and get normal access without updates or autorouting.Screenshot_20250829_080400_Boating.jpg

Downloaded the latest chart updates before the subscription expired. On startup, I still get the same message as Irish Rover above. When I click on 'not now' it just tells me if I need to access charts for this area, I need to subscribe for ÂŁ49.99. According to Google, this is now the situation with Navionics running the latest software version.

This is why it has prompted me to transition across to Cmap. For a similar price, you can access and download charts for any part of the world that continue to work as long as your subscription is active.

Yet a further decline in Navionics since Garmins takeover.

My charts expired a while ago.
I had downloaded them previously for offline use.
Upon expiry of my subscription I still had access to all my charts.
However, routing was no longer available and it stopped displaying AIS contacts.

Eventually and reluctantly renewed my subscription.
As I sail singlehanded most of the time having AIS contacts visible in the cockpit (especially at night) is something I've gotten used to and am now reluctant to do without.
Also I find the the auto-routing feature seems to have improved markedly.

A search on Google Gemini confirms what I posted earlier but the following note appears
Important Note: It's worth being aware that there have been some user reports of issues where charts become inaccessible after a subscription expires, particularly with app updates. While the official policy is that your downloaded charts remain, some users have experienced problems, leading to a need to renew their subscription to regain access.

You may be one of the unlucky ones. Maybe you can't be bothered but if it was me I'd contact them.

Turns out it's not just me, it's the new Navionics way of doing things. That's why Cmap makes more sense if you are traversing multiple regions as I am.

I'm on the same version of the app. Apparently, now when your active subscription expires, you will lose access to the charts for that region.
See my previous post.
As I posted earlier my Adriatic subscription has expired. I can still access the charts and the routes I had saved as below. Nothing has changed. You've just been unlucky apparently

Had he downloaded the charts????

I can confirm I downloaded charts last year and this year no access unless I stumped up another wodge of cash.

How much are the viable alternatives ?
I may try "marine navigator" next year because navionics is only going to get more expensive each year. Seems like everthing is moving to these annual subscription based models now. 🤔

Apparently, this is a relatively new thing. If your chart pack is older and expired a while back then it remains accessible on your device. From now on, any active subscription that expires becomes locked until a new subscription is taken out.

Cmap is a similar price but you get access to all areas for 12 months in your subscription. For me, I would need 3 Navionics regions this year at about ÂŁ50 each so it doesn't make a lot of sense to continue with Navionics.

A bit more searching shows there is in fact a potential issue but I'm not sure I understand what they're saying. This from the Garmin support site

"Why Have My Previously Downloaded Maps Been Removed from My Navionics Boating App?

Chart Availability With the Navionics Boating App

With the release of the Navionics® Boating app version 20.0, any new purchase includes a 1-year auto-renewable subscription for the download of chart content for that specific region, and its use thereof. Without renewing the subscription, you will no longer have access to the previously downloaded charts, as they will be hidden, nor will you be able to download new areas within your coverage. Previously downloaded charts will become visible/accessible again as soon as the subscription for that region is renewed."
The note seems to say things changed with the release of version 20.0 on 25 October 2023. However there's been no change for me for my Med Sub expired Oct 2024 or my Adriatic sub expired February this year.

Is it just the luck of the Irish?

My choice: OpenCPN and O-Charts (o-charts always available even if not updated/renewed).

Re Navionics: I found if you update the app, then charts become unavailable. I have one tablet with older version of app where the charts are still available (other tablet the Navionics was updated and charts lost). However, I rarely use Navionics as charts here are unreliable and app inferior to OpenCPN (yes, the learning curve is steeper with OpenCPN, but Ive5been a PC & Android OpenCPN user for many years).
