I use a rubbery back cover with a screen protector day to day, didn't for a long time and was amazed how well it stood up to being dropped from my top pocket (will I ever learn?!). The cover adds very little bulk and no weight, so it is very good. As mentioned it stops it from sliding around too.
On the water I use a standard waterproof phone "bag", the touch screen is still quite usable.
Battery life is rubbish, but with the extras turned off and the backlight on low you can extend it. The best trick though is to get a 12v, wind up or solar powered charger. I have the latter - a Freeloader - and it works nicely.
All in all, as said many times before and no doubt again, a great value device which I would be lost without. I have an eTrex that I have carried around the world several times, but the poor wee fella does not get quite so much use now!
