Navionics iPhone/iPad - updating the CHARTS

I've noticed that my Navionics charts are out of date on my iPhone. I've been updating the Application using iTunes; there's been several updates this year.

I've had a look at the chart and it's still saying there's an East Last and Hook Spit buoys (North Kent, north of Reculver). I know that these buoys haven't been there for at least six months if not longer (now using the Copras Channel).

Questions:
1) How often are these charts updated?
2) How does one update them?

Using out of date charts is, errm, rather naff! Kind of thing I'd expect Liquid Lunch to teach.

As it happens I've also got the Imray charts installed. These too show the wrong buoys, so the same questions apply for this.

Don't know how often the source charts are updated but AFAIK you just re-download your new chart over the top of the area in question and you get their latest version

Do you have the current version of the Navionics charts, or the one they no longer support? I had a huge argument with their appalling customer services department over this, they basically said I should buy the new one.

Hmm, I was wondering. I was one of the early adopters so have had it ever since my first iPhone in 2008. So I suppose they want me to update to the latest version at £22.

The thing that puts me off is the amazing number of people giving the App a 1 star rating; most are saying that it's basically ****.

I take it that you did shell out your £22 and did the update?

The bigger question, which to be honest I'm mildly miffed about is why they don't have a way of letting us know the version and date of the chart. To be honest, this is downright dangerous.

I'll preface this with "I have the old version of the App" - Navionics Gold UK Holland version 5.0.4, GeoCore version 01.00.03.

There's no obvious way of downloading a chart. Any idea how you do this?

The old version of Navionics HD doesn't have an update function, updating the app doesn't update the charts. The latest HD version - released about 18 months ago has free lifetime chart updates. I bought it on release and have updated two or three times since. It's an extraordinary deal - the updates for a regular plotter are about £125 but on the ipad version they're free for life and the base product is only about £35! If your boat could use an ipad as a plotter it's a no brainer - you get all the added functionality of the iPad 'for free' for less than the cost of a plotter and about a quarter of the cost of a 10 inch touchscreen plotter. It wouldn't suit some installations, even with a waterproof tough case, but for a sheltered steering position it's an unbeatable package.

I see what you mean Glenn.
I am sure that after I did one of the upgrades via the app store, I had to re-download the map.
I tried clicking on download map in the menu (green button at bottom of screen), but it said "you already have the highest level of detail for this area".

The only other thing I can think of is to delete the app from the device and then reinstall, followed by a map download. However, this would also mean that you would lose any waypoints, routes and tracks stored on the device.

I'm sure that means you have the 'old' HD version, on the new one you download without getting that message. Confusingly the 'new' and the 'old' HD versions were both on sale at the same time for most of the last eighteen months, only the new one gives lifetime updates. The old HD version has now disappeared from the app store.

I dont have the HD version- I was referring to the iphone version. I was under the impression that the only difference was in the screen area/resolution on the ipad (HD) version.

Have convinced SWMBO that I "need" an ipad for Xmas ("what for? You've got a laptop"; "yes dear, but this is a vital piece of safety gear...")

Absolutely essential - how many thousands of lives have been saved by an ipad on board - who knows? A goos used iPad with GPS is about £250 and SWMBO can use it as a Kindle :)

It looks like I'll need to 'invest' in the latest software so I can get the charts upgraded.

I sort of don't mind as it's a good deal, but I'm a bit disappointed that they don't let you know that you're running on old charts. My Standard Horizon CP300 chart plotter whinges about it every time I switch it on. Even a simple chart date on the splash screen would have helped.

So I'll update both the iPhone and the iPad. But as I'm not likely to be going anywhere exciting any time soon, I'll wait until next spring.

Thanks all.

No, I'm hoping that their customer services will see the error of their ways. It will cost them a lot of lost sales when I tell people how appalling Navionics customer support is.

I bought two of their apps, one for the Mediterranean, and one that included the Canary Islands just before we left on the trip there. They withdrew both of the apps before we even arrived!

When I buy an app, I expect it to be regularly updated, which was my whole point in buying them.

I've just gone down this route - bought an Ipad 1 with 3G for £240, including a keyboard and case.

I've sync'd it with my laptop, as I have always done with my iPhone, so ended up with Navionics on the iPad.

I can open it up and use the 2x option to expand it on the screen.

So now I am wondering if I should bother spending £49 on the ipad version, which was the whole point in the first place.

What's the difference?

Here it is.

This picture is the iPad version showing a similar area to the iPhone version, I.e. what you will et on the iPad doubling the size.

It's all about how many pixels it shows. The iPad version has many more.

Thanks for the comparisons, I can see the difference even on those .jpg's but I wasn't sure if there is any functional differences.

As an aside, my iPhone version is a lot more up to date than both your devices - apart from the marina pontoons, I also have a YACHT CLUB instead of a YATCH CLUB !!

Interesting. It may be the versions. I have iPhone Europe west 5.0.4 which covers from Norway down to Tunisia and the UK to the black sea. I have not upgraded to a later version as the coverage is now less.

The iPad is UK and holland hd 4.0 which is the latest.

I've got Navionics on my Samsung Ace and its got the same level of detail as your Ipad version. Perhaps you did'nt leave long enough for the detail to load on you Iphone?

Curiouser and Curiouser.

On my iPhone I have Version 4.0 (Geocore version 01.01.04) which has been replicated on my iPad. However, for Yarmouth Harbour, I can't see all the pontoons on the phone but I can on the pad, and the phone shows a YATCH club and the pad shows a YACHT club.

EDIT: I have added a screen shot from each, iphone on the left, Ipad on the right.

This suggests that the iPad version has somehow been updated without being upgraded, if you know what I mean.

Nick try zooming in on the Solent outside Yarmouth and then move the cursor into Yarmouth on the Iphone, cos I had a similar view on my phone before I did that and after doing that got a lot more detail. For some reason didn't like zooming in whilst focussed on Yarmouth
