Navionics iPad App Updated

I recently bought an iPad 3, and have been patiently waiting for the Navionics app to reappear on the iTunes store. I had a look today, and an updated version has been released, but the three reviews are not very positive. In particular, one of them states that the graphics are terrible and worse than the previous version. This is a bit worrying, as I held off buying an iPad, waiting for the latest version with the higher res screen to be released. I'm now in two minds whether to risk 45 quid on something which is not going to work as well as the previous release.

Has anyone here downloaded the latest update? Are the comments on iTunes just scaremongering? Thanks in advance for any help.
 
I have UK & Holland HD ver 2.5.2 the latest update. It is absolutely fine on my iPad 2.

I've just had the update on my iPad3 - comments on iTunes are justified IMO.

It's very bitmapped.

There's a comment about it not allowing to put a fuel consumption figure in of less than 3.8l/hr - that seems true as well.

Looks as if problem is with ipad3.

Tradewinds.....could you replace that photo with a smaller one my screen has gone funny.

Sorry about that - didn't check the size before uploading :rolleyes:.

I've cropped the image down so the bitmapping is obvious (reducing the file size smoothed it all down).

I wonder whether you have to download the maps again - I might try that.

Downloaded that portion of the map again - no difference.

No problem with resolution on the ipad 2, zoom all the way in and no pixelisation if thats the right term, i can confirm the 3.8 lts though but sure its just a glitch
 
One of those reviews on the iTunes Store is mine. I was rather disappointed with the latest Navionics HD update. It would appear they have tried to update the graphics for the iPad 3 however completely messed it up in the process.
Also, you can't set your fuel consumption to anything below 3.8 l/h???

Aside from the two issues above, it seems to have been working...
 
Thanks for the feedback so far. I read the replies earlier this afternoon, and based on the three positive replies, bought the app. All I can say is that I'm disappointed - the comments on the iTunes store and the subsequent replies on this thread are correct - on an iPad3, the display is pretty horrible - not the resolution, but the lack of interpolation when rendering the vectors.

I am also somewhat surprised that the download doesn't include the higher resolution images, and you have to zoom in to an area to force a download of the more detailed information. This could be a bit of a problem if you are going somewhere and haven't zoomed in to get the data. It is also a bit tedious panning around the Bristol Channel to get the info downloaded. I take it that once downloaded, the info stays on the iPad?

You can download large chunks of map by going into Menu - Download Map (at the bottom). This way you can download all the maps you'll need whilst you're sat at home before you head off.
 
This sounds like an iPad3 issue. I am using it on an iPad and it's great. When they first released it it was awful, it crashed every 5 minutes. Eventually they fixed it. I'm sure they'll resolve these issues.

I was just thinking what a great app it is!
 
Its a feature of the navionics charts that information is not visible on lower resolutions otherwise they would be too cluttered
This is also the case with traditional plotters.
The smaller the screen the greater the problem.

I fail to see what the problem is. I have an iPad 3 and the display is perfect. Not pixellated at all.

Please post a picture of a bad display so I can compare. I have used iPad 1,2 and 3 and have seen no difference. What am I doing wrong?

It's good software design to not clutter up your device with data you don't want. If you want everything just zoom out and download the whole area you have purchased.

I have the app on a new iPad and do not get the effect shown in Tradewinds pic, even when zoomed further in on Havergate island. Very pleased with it, great improvement on the old phone app on an iPad.
 
I have got Navionics on my iPad 2. I have updated( but did not notice any difference). The resolution panning rate etc is similar to my c maps and maxsea. For the price it's a great back up.
The maps so far have shown a bit less detail than the c-maps, but often different mapping systems will be better or worse depending the area you in.

I think the main limiting factor is that the GPS Acuracy of the iPad does not seem as good as a dedicated marine version. It may be that I am often using the iPad in areas where the gps signal is attenuated by the hull structure, but my impression so far is that even outside the position is not as stable as it should be. There are external gps units available and these may be worth considering if you are planning to use the iPad as your primary navigation instrument. For me it's a very useful and cheap back up.
 
To be honest I got the iPad3 for other uses.

The Navionics app is just a bit of fun - pre-planning, having a look at places on a chart when reading articles etc.

I wouldn't use it instead of my other dedicated plotters.

It would be nice if the 'HD' was actually HD though :)
