Loads of people have Navionics on their phones, and it seems sensible to use this as a backup to the yacht's main plotter.

But I first need to register with Google, who insist they have access to "private" areas of my 'phone, such as contact lists etc.

Are there any concerns I should have about this?

Depends if you don't mind them knowing a lot more about your personal life. Obviously the more they know about you the more valuable that information becomes. Along with your email in gmail, your google searches, and your android browser history, it allows them to build a better profile of you and your contacts, they can then target advertising at you. Or, if they were like the nice people at Facebook, they could sell to others to use.

Personally, I just created another google account specifically for the phone. Considering the amount of access some Android apps request you can assume that nothing on your phone is private.
