Navionics charts unreadable

I took delivery today of my new Navionics charts of Western Europe, 46XG, on a Compact Flash card. When I put it into my Raymarine C120 plotter, all the charts of France were unreadable: they were covered by a dense red raster, and had totally weird colours: red, green, yellow. Most of the chart detail appeared to be there, though very hard to decipher.
In all areas except the French the charts were displayed in the normal fashion. The problem only seems to exist in the areas based on French data.
Of course when I returned the chart cartridge, the man behind the counter had never heard of such a problem.
Have you ever seen something similar? And if you have, how was it solved?

I have the problem you described - had it since I got my current chart cartidge about 3 years ago. Navionics platinum charts on Raymarine E120. It is a particular issue for me around Cherbourg and Saint-Vaast. I'm not aware of a solution, but I would say that you do get used to it. From memory, the colours represent different types of seabed.

Out of interest - Have you got the latest firmware v5.16 on your plotter..?

I understand that various Navionics issues were corrected in the latest software on both the C and the E Series displays.

Are you certain of that? If so, I might give it a go, but there is no mention of that on the "software history" in your link. But I find that every time I upgrade the software the plotter runs slower than it did before - same problem you get when updating the O/S on an aged lappie.

I think I'm currently running v.5.04 - so it should have all of the updates apart from those in the latest version released 2 years ago.

The link I posted does mention
... 'Modified card sequencing to prevent display resets when using the Navionics 44XG / 46XG cartography'

The other reason that I mentioned updates was because I lent a Compact Flash card to sbdy else at the weekend who needed it to update their plotter to allow them to use the latest Navionics charts..

Not sure personally (since I have SH and B&G plotters on board) but it could be worth a try... Nothing to lose.

Yes I had it too! If you go into, I hope I remember correctly, "Cartography" and look for some "seabed" options. Turn them from what they are to the "other one" ie from on to off or vice versa (Sorry to be vague but you'll see if you've got it right because the image corrects to what you want). It seems to be the French charts that are problematic and we also have other issues with the area covered by French charts which I've taken up with Navionics - see my post re Navionics being too much for Raymarine plotter.

Same here - NPMR is correct - cartography and disable the seabed layer.

I will try again.
I tried fiddling with a number of settings and I have a feeling the seabed option was one of them, but I'm not sure.
I will report back.

Well done guys. :encouragement:

I had this problem. It's all the fault of French fishermen, according to the Navionics guy I spoke to - they wanted extra seabed data. If you can't disable it because you've got an old plotter you are stuffed, as was I.
Navionics gave me my money back. I now use Maxsea Time Zero on an ipad and I've found it good and reliable, and cheap. Don't imagine I'll ever buy another plotter.

Problem solved.
In the menu, choose cartography setup, then put 'coloured seabed areas' off, and switch off the set. When you switch it back on, the funny colours have disappeared.
Apparently the change is only implemented when the set is switched off. If you only turn 'coloured sefabed areas' off and return to the chart, the change is not implemented.
Thanks all for your contributions.
