hi,

i have a raymarine rc400 handheld gps and a raymarine c70 chartplotter, both of which accept navionics cf cards. is it possible/legal to backup my (single) navionics 28g chart card onto a different blank cf card, so i can use it in both plotters simultaneously? i really dont want to spend another £160 on a new navionics card if i dont need to. if this is possible, is it easy to do? many thanks ryan

You can back it up with any CF reader onto a hard drive or another card (and are legally entitled to do so), but you'll not be able to use it as the CF card is protected so that only the correct card and reader will work..... ie putting it on another card won't work.

Morgana is right - the files are encrypted with the serial number of the CF card - and so can only be "decrypted" when read from a card with the same serial number

So you can back them up to guard against you accidentally wiping them from the card - but they will only work when restored to the original card.

You need a second copy for a second plotter I'm afraid
