Our updates subscription for our Navionics Platinum card expires shortly and I got the renewal through on e-mail. When I followed the link it offered 50% off the renewal price, which I thought was reasonable until it took me to the final page where I found that normal renewal is the current cost of buying the card new - £339!

Okay, so the 50% takes it down to £169 but that still strikes me as being a bit steep for a year of updates and with no guarantee of the 50% reduction being a permanent fixture I am far from convinced that it is worth it.

Am I off the mark here or are Navionics indeed fleecing people for updates?

They have been quoting the 'renewal discount' against the new purchase price of a new chart for as long as I can remember.

Given that at best we are going to get a late start to the season I would simply delay renewal until the boat was back in the water as you should be able re-start the subscription to update service at any time.

Around Boat show time there usually an additional 10% off. However, you’re still better off delaying renewal for as long as possible. Each month delayed is equivalent to 8% off.

Delaying makes sense in terms of not wasting money now but the concept of effectively paying for new charts each year just rankles a bit.

First renewal on my current card updated me from Navionics + small to UK and Ireland for £99 which I reckoned was a decent deal. Very little changes around my main boating area year on year so not renewing this year, or indeed possibly until I get the opportunity to expand my cruising area considerably.

I boat in Mallorca and did the update when I bought the boat and then again at the end of the year as it expired.

I doubt I will do an update now for years.

I don't know where you cruise, but where I am there are no bouys ( I can think of 2 in the whole of Mallorca - Santa Ponca Bay) and the water is deep without shifting dunes.

So I would take a view as to how regularly you really need to update.

Yes, has been thinking the same and haven’t always updated with previous boats as we know our waters fairly well. That said, it is East Coast so bouys aplenty and no shortage of sandbanks ?
