Navionics Boating app AIS limited range issue

I presume you left them running for the same amount of time before comparing? Especially with Class B vessels, it can take 10-20minutes (in my experience) before you pick up the entire range of AIS contacts just because of the time period between transmissions + the chance that not every transmission is picked up by your receiver.

Real-time ship movements are broadcast to the iNavX app and overlaid directly on the chart. iNavX AIS Live provides instant access to AIS data; making ships in the immediate vicinity visible without the need for a radar or AIS transponder.

The iNavX AIS Live overlay requires a data connection to connect to the service, either via a cellular or Wi-Fi connection. The radius of the AIS data provided is 30 nautical miles from the device position or selected waypoint.


Could it be that Navionics is using your AIS transponder and inavx is using your phone or wifi/internet?

No the app is running on the Ipad and is connected true wifi with the digital yacht router
