I haven't seen this mentioned elsewhere. Just had Navionics update on my Android phone, and swap everything over to Navionics Boating HD from Navionics UK and Ireland. Everything has swapped over OK, but looking at the App feedback in the Play Store it looks as though renewing subscriptions in the future could be more costly.

Mine runs out in a couple of months and it shows £34.99 to renew which is the same as last year.

Anyone know more about this, and whether we're likely to get stiffed by a price hike?

And why haven't they added AIS overlays!!!!!

I thought they mentioned that you could use it across all your devices which would be a saving as at the moment you pay separately for ipad iphone and plotter.

You only need to renew your subscription if you want to update, isnt it?
You never *loose* your downloaded charts?

I have the iPad version and seem to have paid £49.99 last year for the HD version which did not allow me to use it on my phone - it’s now saying £34.99 to renew and I can have it on all devices across my Apple ID! Good news for some?

Not understood I have had it for the last 4 or 5 years and only ever paid once and that covered both iPhone and iPad. You only pay for chart updates and that subscription lasts 12 months but again applies to both IOS devices.

If I understand correctly, you have one subscription that you run on two devices. I did this for a while but when I tried to use the AIS app with Digital Yacht, I had to purchase a proper separate iPad version and pay anther fee. I hadn’t realised that the iPad was just running the iPhone version and they are not the same.

You were trying to use with an iNavX product and that’s why you needed a different app.

The vanilla Navionics (incl Navionics +) will run on two IOS devices - be that an iPad and an iPhone or two iPads or two iPhones..

I don't think I made myself clear. The app I was trying to use it with required a separate licence number for each device which you don't get using the app between two devices.

When I spoke to support, they mentioned that the iPhone version is not exactly the same as the dedicated iPad version which has better functionality due to a larger screen and faster processor. I will not renew the iPhone app since I use Navionics on the plotter and use Ray Control from the cockpit with the iPad which makes life easy, but the iPhone and digital Yacht app for AIS redundant.

I paid £34.99 last year for the standard version, but now it’s giving me the HD verision for free!

Still worried that there will be a sting in the tail at some point ..... nothing is free in this world.

We are hopefully taking our boat up to the Clyde for a couple of weeks next week.

I have a venerable Garmin GPS MAP 76 and am looking to load a detailed map of the area (Not Colour) on to the 8mb or so of memory it has.

The alternative is Navionics or some other Android base Phone/Tablet App. I did download the trial app but because I could not get an idea of charges, uninstalled it PDQ, thinking I might download it again and maybe use the 2 week free trial. However, from this thread it looks like the cost is £34.99 per annum (If I choose to renew) and the existing map stays on the device. Is the price correct? because that would be OK especially if I could use it on a tablet.

Are there other apps I should I look at?

To DavidPBO: I use Marine Navigator on an old Android tablet with Visit My Harbour Admiralty charts, as well as Navionics on an iPad 2. Pros and cons to each. Navionics is good for checking pilotage when you know an area well, but for "proper" charts I find the rasterised charts on MN easier to use (for example, light characteristics are easily seen, rather than having to pop up 2 or 3 menus to find them).

To other Navionics users: I have the old HD app and am getting nag messages to move to the new app. I don't have a current subscription, so could stay with the old app.
Has anyone made this update? Any benefit? Any detriment? (eg higher memory footprint or power drain?) I am using an "old" iPad 2 (not Air) 32GB and I know the battery is degrading, and iOS is gradually bloating its way through the available RAM.
