Got an early version and never found it much use - the controls are opaque ( for example sometimes it gives a boat speed and other times it doesnt with no obvious operating difference) and some dont work like how do you put in a waypoint.

But comments on this forum suggest that things have moved on. Before I update ( and no doubt have to pay) what will the current version of the software do in common with a normal plotter. Waypoints, routes, VMG, COG, TRK etc?

Not sure about versions - but surely it is one of the best value apps out there?

For less than the cost of a single paper chart you get electronic charts for the whole area and loads more.

Not the easiest interface to use - but very hard to produce a good complex app lke that given the limited input capabilities of a smartphone

I've got the latest version on my galaxy note (is it a phone? Is it a tab? :)) and I'm not greatly impressed

Symbols and text are both way too small to be read or recognisable unless you zoom in and hold - if you zoom and let go it redraws the symbols and text too small to read again!

Despite it supposedly being possible, I can find no way to edit a waypoint once entered other to delete back from the end of the route and start again

Waypoints cannot be entered or edited by coordinate nor is it easy to get the coordinates of a waypoint

I haven't tried it out under way yet but as a passage planning tool it is about a much use as chocolate teapot!

As a chart plotter I anticipate it fairing a little better but still hampered by the inability to increase the text and symbol sizes

Frankly, its only worth the money on the grounds that its the only option! (For having vector charts on a smartphone that its - there are better options if other hardware is included in the equation)

I have the new version on my phone and on my Tab10.1 and it works really nice on the Tab. The only limitation is that you can't remove a route from the chart without deleting it.

The GRIB file downloader and viewer is excellent and works offline too.

Galaxy S2

Must admit I am not overly impressed with user interface. I have not found or seen ETA's. Cannot work out how to favourite local weather and Tides. I was off Cromer when I down loaded it and it still wants to give me the favourites there (pick a pin).

Please tell me how I get Gribs it was one of the main reaosns I downled and I cannot find out how to

All help and tips appreciated.

From the app, tap the "i" button.
Select "edit" to go to the location page.
Tap the "+" icon, top right to add a location.
Search for a location by typing in and tap the Search button. This will add tide and current info to your location automatically. If you select a location using the map you have the option of adding custom locations for tide and current which can be useful as offshore locations give more accurate wind speed.
Once you have the location saved, go back using the back button to see the Wind&Tides info page. This gives a 4 icon view of sun/moon rise/set, wind, tide, current, now tap on the wind speed and this will load the chart along with a GRIB file forecast for the next 3 days.

Even with your instructions it took me a moment (and I thought I was not a technophob!).

I had not made my home spot as new favourite just tried to convert the old one of Cromer.

Will try the route function out tomorrow see how it works. At present all I can see it being is a series of lines on a chart...

Cool, the grib file instructions I'd never have worked our for myself!

So now ... can someone tell me how to move a waypoint?

.

What i button? All there is on mine is a + and a - and the usual back button and menu button. And a camera icon.

And if I go into the menu thingy and then settings I find nothing useful but the phone trying to log on to twatter. After which it usually forces a close.

Go into menu, tap wind & tide, and move the crosshairs to wherever you want to know wind and tide. You get more than that, sunrise current etc.

Going back to your original post, the current version does exactly the same with boat speed.

I think it's GPS is wobbly but there are others who don't. COG, VMG etc NO, you only get SOG. However if you're cunning with the pins you can get BTW and DTW.

Route planning is not good eg if you want COG & DTW with multiple waypoints, no.

But for what it costs and accuracy when it gets it's act together and vector charts, I'd say it's unbeatable. I just hope they improve it ... at the moment they're concentrating on user entry which allows you to pick up other peoples "corrections" ... just twatter bollx

Camera function on Navonics app

What does it do? Don't want to use it incase it opens a new file or something in the App.

There is eta I think in the route menu. You can enter estimated speed and it shows the time and fuel u will use.

I see there is a new update out today...

Yep and it hasn't addressed any of the issues which make the app all but useless as a serious navigation tool. Still can't edit Waypoints for example

It sounds like you have an old version of the app. Is their a release number in it anywhere? I've got 5.3.1 (the old version) on my phone and the new version which, for some reason known only to an idiot in Navionics, is 2.2 installed on the tablet. I think you may need to buy https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.navionics.singleAppUKHolland&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsIml0Lm5hdmlvbmljcy5zaW5nbGVBcHBVS0hvbGxhbmQiXQ.. to get the new one.

There's an excellent article in panbo here (complete with pictures) that totally fails to explain any of it... http://www.panbo.com/archives/2010/12/navionics_mobile_5010_sorting_it_out.html
