Navionics and Android

To see all of the available Android Market apps you will need a Google GMail account, otherwise you will just be directed to the HTC sourced market.

.

This sounds like the sort of "tie in" that Apple do and which has put me off buying an I Phone.

Why would Navionics tie the sale of their product to a google g mail account?

Further update:

Looks like the app needs a bit more work on the Android version.

Navionics kills the battery on the HTC Desire. It puts the GPS on full-time unlike other Applications which have settings to pulse the GPS off and on at user selected intervals. When the app is dormant it still leaves the GPS on, as it is impossible to exit the App you continually drain the battery until you kill the App (using App killer) or use the widget to switch of the GPS. This is not very good.

It seems possible to record an "empty" track (ie. turn tracking on, then turn it off without going anywhere). This then becomes an entry in your list of tracks which is difficult to delete. In order to delete it you need to display the track on the screen and "press" on the track to get the track details and the delete facility, as the track is empty there is nothing to "press" on.

There is no edit available on the recorded tracks. Using it as a "log" on the boat over the weekend it recorded a nice track etc. for the trip and then proceeded to continue recording the track all the way home in the car (because I forgot to switch tracking off). When veiwing the track and sharing it on the facebook/navionics sharing facility, you then get the trip details including the drive home. It would be nice to be able to cut segments from the track.

Hope this helps

Martin

Its only the "Andriod Market Place" which is tied to an email account. Unlike Apple products you are not forced to buy from the Market Place, you can download from anywhere on T'internet. I guess Navionics want to retain an element of control on the app as its expensive, the market place gives them some control.

You can do what I did, open the required gmail email account, divert it to your real email account, promptly ignore it for ever more.

I have GMail

I have just added the Navionics package to my HTC Desire, loaded and running with no isues so far (bar pinch zoom as previously mentioned). I opted for the Northern Europe chart package which includes UK South coast and Europe N coast down to and including the Med (according to Navionics, I haven't got round to checking full extent yet!)

My purchase defaulted to a Euro transaction, worked out at £20 and a few pence.

I have a GMail account and I still don't see Navionics app in the market. I still think its an Android version issue. What version of Android is on the HTC Desire by default? Bet its later than 1.6.

The good news is that Navionics are listening...although everything is "future"

I am running Navionics on an HTC Desire Android phone, can I report/request the following:

1. The software leaves the GPS receiver switched fully on, even when the focus is moved away to another application. Similar Navigation applications have a option to reduce GPS usage or to switch it off/exit from within the programme. The only way currently to switch it off on the Desire is to kill the Navionics application using an app killer or force the GPS off with a switch-off “widget”

This is a bug we are aware of that will be fixed in the next release.
2. Pinch Zoom would be a nice feature.
This depends on the System the app was built upon and will be implemented in the future.
3. I do not see a bearing reading on my phone, just the speed.
Bearing is available on the top task bar only using the distance feature.
4. It would be nice to have “North Up” or “Heading Up” options for the view
We will consider this suggestion for future releases.

help with Navionics on Android

Hi - I have downloaded the navionics app on to an Android Sony Ericsson x10. Looks great, but I am having trouple relating the instructions to the real experience! After I have created a route of wey points - I cant seem to sellect it in any way. It shows on the chart and I can save it, but should I be able to click on it and select some options (I can tap away on it for ever, but it never seems to slect it)? How do you get it to follow that route, ie give range and bearing to next wey point?

Might be missing the obvious, soany help appreciated.

Following this thread clsely and a;lso have the X10. Yet to download and install, and still wondering if I should can the X10 and move to a Streak for this sort of thing, given that the Dell product is said to have an excellent battery life. Can you import/export lists of waypoints to a PC? NMEA output may be too much for which to hope!

Anyway, the noob question. I've never paid for an application before, how do you do it? I'm easy with Paypal but wary about handing over a credit card number to something that can atumatically update (and presumable could charge for that). Same goes for debit card number, whichever one they use.

Yes - the instructions manual is a little thin! I think it doesn't follow a route in the ChartPlotter sense. I think that once you have created a route you simply leave it displayed on the screen and follow it using the active GPS position marker. If you want to then see bearing/distance etc. there is a "Distance" function that puts a further marker on the screen showing the distance and bearing to a slected point, which you set on a waypoint

as a cheapskate alternative on android you can use mytracks and use the satellite map - handy for a quick reference but it does not tie in with a chart.
I use it for five hours last weekend (on my t mobile pulse mini) and it gives you a useful track which you can sync with your pc
