Given the posts on GPS / Charts thought people might like to know that all their charts now appear in the apps store. The android application looks exactly the same to me as the iPhone app recently reviewed in one of the sailing mags.

About £20 for Western Europe.

Personally not sure their practical use apart from as a backup, but i do like revising my pilotage on the train in the morning.
 
Yep - installed it yesterday. Not used in anger yet but quite a bargain for backup use

PS Top Tip for GoogleMarket - Do not change your googlemail account to gmail, as it seems to kill the ability to download apps such as this - just hangs perpetually wiht no message. Took a while to find the cause, which seems to be a known Google glitch

Thanks to both for the heads up.

Can I ask which phones you both use?

I'm about to change phones and want to get a compatible one. Can I be fairly confident that the App will work on literally any phone with Android 1.6 or later? I'm a bit worried that Navionics have "certified" the Motorola Droid, Nexus One, HTC Tattoo, Acer Liquid as compatible. Suggests they might not be sure about others. Or am I worrying for no reason?

Next question - I assume AGPS works fine with no signal - just takes longer to get the first fix on a cold start, yeah?
 
You can try it and get a refund within 24 hours if you don't like it or it won't work. I have it on the Milestone and it is good but charts not up to date eg R Exe main channel has moved, the MSC Napoli has gone and Westbay Harbour has a new pier. But you get Currents which my Navman hasn't got. There are some features missing from the Android version (I 'm not sure what these are) but they will arrive in time.

I've been using navionics with
my iPhone together with paper charts and find it perfect! I can do things I can't with myich more expensive pc-based chartplotter!
 
Great little app, got it loaded on my HTC Desire.

Couple of issues:

1. Cant swap between north up and course up.
2. Would like to be able to vary the size of the speed box and heading info.
3. Should support pinch gestures for zooming.

However I can switch between this and another GPS task which shows that info as, of course, the Desire is fully multi-tasking ;)

And with AIS running in the browser and the star charts running as well - what more can you need!

Can somebody tell me a) will it work on the HTC Hero and b) the www. website address where I can buy it, 'cos I been looking all over via my unlimited web access deal and I can't find it. Call me Mr Thickie if yer want.
 
I'm amazed the maps are so cheap. I still have a crappy old mobile but I think I'll get an android soon. Can anyone comment on battery life with the different android phones, was thinking of getting the HTC Desire...
 
Many people find that battery life is an issue with the Desire.

I tend to move from Home (USB Charger) to Car (USB Charger) to Work (USB Charger) therefore its not an issue.

If you turn off Wireless and Bluetooth its much better.

With the Navionics Package the maps are loaded to SD card so you can turn off all the radio functions (except GPS!) to save power or use a USB Charge on the boat.

What is the application called? Can't find anything under the name Navionics, and using search terms like charts or marine charts or nautical charts just returns page after page of useless looking stuff!
 
Using your Phone (preferably through WiFI as its a large App)

On your phone go to "Applications" - on mine this is from the standard home page, press the small "up arrow" icon on the bottom left of the screen

Find the "Market" application - looks like a shopping bag with a green robot logo

Pressing the Market Application will open the App. At the top right handside of the screen is a magnifying glass icon, press it to search.

Type in "Navionics" in the search screen

A list of the Navionics map sets is listed - select "UK and Netherlands " (or anywhere else in the world you are interested in)

No Navionics apps

Martin - searching for Navionics just gives me the message:

"There are no matches in Android Market for the search: Navionics"

Not sure why you can find them and I can't!

I have an HTC Hero (G2 Touch) phone on T-Mobile and there are no restrictions on the account.
 
Needs Android 1.6

Think I know why I can't find the Navionics apps on my HTC Hero. Looking at the Navionics web site, the app needs Android 1.6 and the Hero has 1.5 (as standard), so perhaps the Android Market simply doesn't show apps that would not work - makes sense. Luckily, Android 2.1 is imminent for the Hero, so we should be able to use the Navionics package soon!
 
To see all of the available Android Market apps you will need a Google GMail account, otherwise you will just be directed to the HTC sourced market.

I have just added the Navionics package to my HTC Desire, loaded and running with no isues so far (bar pinch zoom as previously mentioned). I opted for the Northern Europe chart package which includes UK South coast and Europe N coast down to and including the Med (according to Navionics, I haven't got round to checking full extent yet!)

My purchase defaulted to a Euro transaction, worked out at £20 and a few pence.
 
Is anyone able to respond to Toads question about the AGPS thingy? If I'm in the middle of the Atlantic to take an extreme example, without any phone signal, does the GPS function still work to provide a fix? Actually I'm asking in respect of the iPad but presume the Android AGPS will be the same answer.
