Hi,

Wonder if anyone can help please,
I am a member of CYC and would like to organize a trip up the River severn.
I am looking for costs and licence's from Sharpness to Stourport, I have a interested party of about 10 boats and need to know about regs and costs.
I have sent a few emails to links off web sites but with no reply, any help would be very helpful.

I used to be a boater on the Severn for many years but I can't help you with all your questions.

I do know that you need to pay for the lock in and out at Sharpness unless you have a annual river or canal licence. I think this cost is £25 each way for a single boat however I'm sure that there are discounts for a block booking.

I know you can buy a temporary licence for the canal for a day or a week at a time but I do not have any facts about paying weekly for a River licence.

I would love to know if it is possible to self certificate a boat for the Boat Safety Scheme on a temporary basis as I am hoping to revisit the Severn myself later this year.

hi,

i think the locking fee is £25 each way per boat, although this may be waived if there's a few of you? not quite sure... there a strange lot up at sharpy, friendly one minute and grumpy the next, and ive been through 7/8 times a year for donkey's..lol.

as for licensing, you can self certify the safety certificate and i think the license is £26 a week for a ten metre..

that said it's well worth the trip if only once in your lifetime, ive moored a few places around the south coast and lived in stourport all my life and love havin the boat 30 minutes away..

give me a holla if theres anythin else you need to know.

p.s. the portishead cruising club run an annual trip up on good friday.. might be worth dropping an email into them about contacts?

I believe that boats arriving by sea as temporary visitors are exempt from the safety Scheme.

Many thanks for that, that's quite a lot of money for ten boats in a lock £500.
Does anybody have the lock keepers no. I think a chat might be in order.

the pierhead number is 01453 511968 but i'll doubt you'll get anything out of them.. better off lookin on waterscape website and talkin to someone in the bw office in glos. even the harbour master has gone now, in a cost cutting exercise!

They are no doubt a tad busy today

New Lock gates being fitted this week.

There are a few of use that are also interested, from Portishead and cardiff

Would be good if a discount could be arranged for "bulk"

We went up last September and had to pay £50, that did include our licence up the canal and the Severn aswell.

Felt like I had to stay up there for a week to get me £50 worth :-) Not a lot after Gloucester until we got to Upton on Severn. Nice Marina and the world's most expensive sausage and mash!

Anyone know if the lock - works in Bristol are on schedule? Getting withdrawl symptoms.

You can see how this is takin off, it started with 2 boats and now could add up to 30 easy, mind you we will have a great time. I suppose £50 for the license as well aint to bad.I will try the tel no. later on in the week and try and set a date, would be great to meet up with Portishead,

Don't forget Bristol! We're land locked 'till they fix that lock! May 7th I think.

Did the trip last year, no intention of ever going further than Gloucester again, but would be interested in a convoy up to Gloucester?

The Birmingham Navy won't know whats hit 'em!

yes Sneddon, I see work being carried out on the Bristol Lock not sure what there up to, but I hope it will be sorted by Bristol Harbour Festival.
A large amount of boats are enjoying the festival each year from our side and I believe there will be more this year.
It must be said that we all enjoy it and feel another trip before Bristol would be a good idea, hence Gloucester.

Boats with no masts?

Whatever next, they'll be letting women drive busses next!

:-)

Have allways been made most welcome at PCC, do they allow us mobos to join? The only clubs in Bristol CityDocks are the the Cabot and the Bristol "mooring" Clubs!

I spoke to Bristol Lockmaster this week. He said that from May 3rd the locks should be in a operational state. Otherwise only on tides of over 9.6m (Bristol)

Share your shock and horror at the bus idea. Apart from anything else, they'd always have to have a man there too in case they needed to reverse the bus or fill it up with fuel.

I don't think PCC take mobos on club moorings - certainly NUSC dont. But there is nothing to stop you joining either club and basing the boat elsewhere.

Quite happy mooring in Bristol but the clubs there are more interested in pub singers and quizes than boats ;-)

Not sure if you have to book the two new bridges on the canal, I think you do. You will not have to book them if you are a low air draft boat e.g non flybridge.

Always used to think that joining a sailing club with a mobo must be like joining a biker club with a car. So whilst both clubs mentioned would be very welcoming ( well at least PCC would - NUSC are being funny about new members at the moment) I'm not sure you would be chatting about a common interest.
