NAVICO RT6500

I have an old NAVICO RT6500 VHF radio . We would like to install an external flush mounted waterproof speaker in the cockpit. The output for the external speaker is 2 watts. Its difficult to find a speaker with such a low wattage. If I purchase say an 8 watt speaker which are readily available, will the sound be distorted or quieter.

I'm sure an 8W speaker will be fine - speakers are specified in maximum wattage and you can always connect a lower wattage source.

I doubt it'll make any difference to the loudness.

It's the impedance, in ohms (Ω) that has to match.
