Long way to go with just basic lighting, might be worth having a chat with some of the Jester 2008 lot did to prepare for the Azores trip to get some good ideas

I have a combined tricolour and allround white at the masthead and I have a bicolour red/green where most have a steaming light. This meets all regs and means not light/ wires/holes at deck level.

Sailing is Tricolour, motoring is allround white and bi-colour steaming light. Sounds just the right solution for you.
