We have two small children and hope to introduce them to a weekends afloat this summer. Our experience from camping with them is early nights and v. early starts as they seem to have their body clocks tuned to sunrise & sunset when out of the house. So we don't want to be bad neighbours when in small harbours, but we also don't want late night parties going on in the next boat either (we'll get you back at 0530 when you're hard-over in your bunk :p)

I know somewhere I've seen a burgee or similar which is a nautical version of the infamous Baby On Board car stickers, can anyone help me out on this? (It also acts as a sign to other parents with children which would be nice for them).

I think our neighbours used to take the hint from the line of nappies drying on the lifelines, or maybe from the mayhem issuing from within.

I can see the use on a boat, but I never understood the car one.

Am I supposed to treat cars with one differently, or expect them to do something different?

The "Baby On Board" sticker actually originated in the States after a series of road crashes were the rescuers did not realise that there were small children in the car at the scene of accidents and the poor wee things perished.

Regretfully I treat them as meaning "Children On Board - Driver Not Concentrating On Driving" after having seen many examples of drivers tending to the needs of the children rather than getting on with the job of driving.

The more appropriate version says "Danger - driver under the influence of kids".

Fits boats and cars - in both cases, the driver's liable to lose concentration at inopportune moments and on boats, one should expect sudden TOB drills.

I've recently seen "Grandchild on board" stickers! It wouldn't surprise me if full family sets will soon be available - "Second cousin, first removed on board," etc!

You will naturally display all the signs of children on board - constantly tired expression, already sat in the cockpit staring vacantly into space when everyone else is just getting up, scattered toys and inflatables all over the boat, permanently deployed crabbing line, small clothes drying on pulpit...

Been there, done that, got the T shirt.

Now what is the sign for a sulky teenager that only emerges from the cabin to moan, eat and occasionally shower...:D
