SAILING: the fine art of getting wet and becoming ill while slowly going nowhere at great expense.

DEVIATION: Directional inaccuracy in a compass caused by it's tendency to point at an tenth of an ounce metal filling instead of a 7,900 mile diameter, 6,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 tonne planet.

SOLO SAILING: The only situation where the skipper does not immediately blame the crew for every single thing that goes wrong.

SPINNAKER: Very large colourful pennant traditionally flown from the top of the mainmast when running down wind.

and finally

WAKE: 1.Horizontal track in the water caused by the passage of a boat
2.Ceremony held if that track becomes vertical.

Any more ?

Handheld VHF, Handheld GPS, Torch, Ships Clock (some types) - all devices for the storage of flat batteries.

Automatic Bilge Pump - a device that is only called upon to be used when the main battery is dead.

Navtex - A device that tells you what the weather was this morning - this afternoon . . .

Bikini Clad Girlie (BCG) -

definition1: a device for protecting gell coat from UV light.

definition2: a device for motiviting crews on other boats to receive lines when mooring up - NOTE: sometimes other crews will swim out to take lines - helmsman must be aware that there may be swimmers nearby when deploying BCG in this way.

Engine - A device that works perfectly, except when it is urgently required.

Electronic Chart Plotter - A device that is accurate only once, when you throw it over the side and use it as a dutch log.

Port Side - That side

Starboard Side - The other side

Sorry ladies couldn't resist the BCG, I suppose I will pay for it. . . .

Cheers

| knew and occasionally raced against a wonderful old guy in a modified folkboat (Atlefolk) in Chichester harbour many years ago. He had an attractive blonbd wife a 3 stunning blond teenage daughters.
If the racing became close-quarters stuff - they would be deployed along the deck and onto the bows. No man could concentrate for 30 yards. Always worked.
