Naughty Duch Yacht

Interesting read.

It is clear people are leaving the country where they were born because of some sort of problem, racial/religious intolerance, conflict, endemic corruption etc. These problems make "home" a really crap place to live compared to the UK. But they are the result of the culture/religion of the country being left behind.

So when someone fetches up in the UK after what is probably a dangerous and difficult journey, they should leave behind the culture they left and not bring it with them. Something along the lines of burning the boats.

But that's the problem. So many turn up here, legally or otherwise, and want to change the culture here to that which they left behind. I've always said, if the UK is such a great place to be, then when you come here leave it as you found it.

Here here!

I think that would be the reaction of most of us, but I might feel differently if I retired to a hypothetical Mediterranean country where perhaps corruption was widespread, hygiene deficient and crass behaviour towards women accepted as normal. If I were active-minded might want to get involved with those wishing to change local customs. I don't know what proportion of illegal immigrants come here with criminal or exploitative intent, but rather think that most of them are more exploited than exploiting.

People generally don't become refugees because they dislike the traditional culture of the country - though that does apply in a few cases where the traditional culture includes an aspect of discrimination. Most refugees leave home because changes there make life intolerable. Syria was traditionally a civilised place with a tolerant and well-educated populace. Not any more.
